Museums 3/3

Seen here is the initials of two previous owners of a steam trunk. E.S. is unknown, but the A.J. who stencilled his initials on top is supposedly Jonas Alströmer, famed for making Swedes get the point of growing potatoes -- finally! Potatoes were brought here centuries earlier but never caught on. Us Swedes were happy with our swedes (go figure). Alströmer also dealt in textile manufacturing (and industrial espionage, which I found out recently at another museum). His steam trunk can be seen at Vagnhistoriska museet in Fristad, which has carriages and waggons, and a very inspired guide. Some peat moss parafernalia as well.

My fascination for museums and monuments of this ilk keeps growing. The subject is secondary: to me, the main thing is one person's ceaseless passion for one particular thing, their lifelong endeavour to create some lasting thing showcasing this special something. Size is unimportant; ardour is what counts. To me, this is so much more relatable than grand and famous institutions. They are nothing to do with me. It's the small stuff I can identify with.

If you're at all interested in stuff to do with forestry, log driving, old chainsaws, steam engines, etc., Siljansfors forestry museum (skogsmuseum) has it. Insanely informative. Beautiful settings outside Mora, Dalecarlia.

Ryttarens torvströfabrik, the Ryttarens peat litter factory, is preserved as a museum. Peat extraction in Sweden today isn't big business, and my guess is most people don't even know it's happening. These days, it's mainly used in gardening, but also for stuff like insulation, fish tanks and whiskey making. Ryttarens museum is open to the public in summer. You can ride the little sturdy train out on the moss and see how peat was extracted back in the day. Pictured is a detail from an old locomotive.

An old electricity meter workshop turned into a school. Also a playground for tree shadows. This kind of repurposing always gladdens me.

Nettles are edible, as y'all probably know. Use the young leaves (and gloves when handling them). Last year I made some cordial. You can also make the easiest and most cost-effective fertilizer ever by just popping a few stands in a bucket of water and let them stew for three days or so. Really, they can be an asset.
