Sad to see little has changed since the #SuttonTrust's first Elitist Britain report back in 2019; let alone since 2021 when A Stubborn Fury: How Writing Works In Elitist Britain was published:

‘The most powerful and influential people in the UK remain 5 times more likely to have attended a fee-paying school than the general population. Members of this leadership elite are also twice as likely to go to #university over five times more likely to have gone to a #RussellGroup university and 21 times more likely to have gone to #Oxford or #Cambridge than the general population. Just 7% of the general population attends #privateschools

Privately educated tighten their grip on Britain’s most powerful roles - The Sutton Trust

Elitist Britain 2025 explores the education backgrounds of 6,000 of Britain's leading people.

The Sutton Trust
"In 2025 you can still buy advantage, massively increasing your chance of getting into the most powerful roles in the UK. This is grossly unfair & a waste of talent on a huge scale. If we want a fairer, stronger economy, employers & policymakers must take responsibility for levelling the playing field, where privilege is no longer a passport to power."

Ucas reports record disadvantaged applicants to top uni courses

Ucas says it is 'encouraging', but the Sutton Trust charity says the advantage gap has 'hardly shifted'

The latest data from the #SuttonTrust suggest that 'widening participation' at the top #universities has almost no impact over the last 25 years... provided you equate 'top' universities with the #RussellGroup which is not a perfect fit.

It would be better to use the THES ranking to identify top universities as some of the top 20, not in the RG are actually do a pretty god job - my own erstwhile institution, Lancaster U, for instance does pretty well on this & is top 10 but not in the RG!
