[image: Cover for Armory Fan Club - a fanfic by maiji. Digital illustration of Dias and Claude back to back, smiling out at the viewer with swords crossed. The kingdom capital of Lacour is all around them in full festival mode, with blue skies, colourful confetti and hanging buntings. Below is a collage of assorted characters from the game in front of crowds of festival-goers. They are: two giggling women waving a fan that says "Lord Dias" with a heart; a woman holding a bowl and handing out flyers that say "CK" with a heart; a pair of blushing guards being amazed at how cool Dias and Claude are; Gamgee and an older Sufia hefting a sword in a scabbard; a laughing Precis; an annoyed Leon; an amused Granny Moor.]The Sorcery Globe is gone. The Tournament of Arms is back. And so are the two most acclaimed swordsmen in its history!Read Armory Fan Club on AO3This is me, having too much fun. (Note: The above is not Remnant Light Claude. I just needed physical descriptions that make it very clear Dias and Claude went through more eventful adventures after the end of the game, so I repurposed most of the design I came up with for that story. The main difference visually is that he still has his red headband instead of a leather headband.) I love how they made festival Lacour look in SO2R and I really wanted to capture that wonderful medieval-party-under-brilliant-blue-skies vibe! Everyone in this illustration is actually a character in the game. Read the story to find out who they are! Or if you figured it out because you obsessively talk to every NPC like I do, yay for you! While working on The Thesis, I made a silly joke about how in SO2R the Armory Contest (remake translation for Tournament of Arms) recovery room got reconfigured so there's only one guard who witnesses The Conversation between Dias and Claude, and now he's gonna be dying until the end of his shift to share the hot gossip. Next thing I knew, I had a fanfic word count of 1,500 that was climbing with great momentum. To the point where The Thesis almost ended up not being finished because writing this nonsense was more fun, and easier, than translating. Until I got to the fight scenes anyways. And then I was like "This needs a cover!" やれやれ… Armory Fan Club is basically me trying to pack in my thesis evidence of everything I think is great about Dias and Claude as a pairing, some metacommentary on fandom, and of course, my usual love for/references to lots of NPCs! The fan clubs in the story are all based on actual stuff from the game too. I took a lot of screenshots in my SO2R playthroughs so here they are! Spoilers for a bunch of people you can talk to during the tournament. This post does double duty for me saying a while back I'd post about the Claude fan club. There are Dias fans in here as well.[READ-MORE][Screenshot of Claude talking to a youth near the registration table. The youth stammers, "Mr. Kenny, I-I just want t-to say th-that you're…you're a real inspiration to me!"]"Isaol": On the cover, he's the soldier/guard on the right. Unnamed in the game, he's a friendly purple-haired youth pacing near the registration table. If you're Claude, every time you talk to him in between your matches, he grows increasingly impressed. His line in Japanese is quite ardent, but I didn't want to make him too over-the-top of a character in the story. He says: クロードさん、ぼくは、ぼくはモーレツに感動しています! Something like, "Claude-san, I'm, I'm intensely moved/impressed!" Which I don't think fully conveys how intensely moved and impressed he is the way it does in Japanese, haha. モーレツ ("intensely") is probably 猛烈: fiercely, violently. So the English take on it is cute and nicely done to convey his awe of Claude's performance in the tournament.[Screenshot of Claude, Rena and Dias in the recovery room with the guard at the door. 1) Dias is leaving. Claude says, "Will I see you again?" 2) Dias has left. When you talk to the guard, he says, "The Armory Contest's ended. It was pretty good, wasn't it?"]"Garet": On the cover, he's the soldier/guard on the left. Unnamed in the game, he's the guard at the door of the recovery room when Dias goes to see Claude after the finale. He witnesses the conversation between Dias and Claude. Sure, he seems chill about it, but he's actually just putting on a professional front and the memory now haunts his dreams. I mean that in a good way. [Several screenshots showing Rena or Claude talking to a young woman with long dark hair, a red headband and a red dress. 1) To Rena she says: "Hi, I'm Lucy! I saw Claude performing out there. He was sooo dashing! Is it okay if I have a crush on him?" 2) To Claude she says, "Hi, I'm Lucy! I saw your match out there. Is it okay for me to have a crush on you?"]Lucy: A girl with long dark hair pacing the left side of the arena. She was my fave tournament audience NPC when I was little. No matter whose story I played, every time I ran around the colosseum I would talk to her just to see her ask for permission to have a crush on Claude. Of course she would be the president of his fan club![Screenshots of Precis cheering Claude on during the tournament events. 1) Ashton, Precis, Claude, Rena are outside the castle entrance after Claude said he wants to enter the tournament. Precis is saying, "Oh, go ahead, go ahead! I can't wait to see your studliness in action!" 2) Precis, Rena, Ashton in the stands during the tournament. Precis and Ashton (and Gyoro and Ururun) are looking shocked/slightly freaked out. Precis is saying, "Claude's absolutely the dreamiest! I can't believe what's happening!"] Precis: Okay, Lucy aside, Precis was definitely Claude's #1 fan at the Arms. Everyone in your party says nice things, but she is by far his most vocal supporter from the get-go if you have her in your party. Her comments always crack me up, and the SE/SO2R translation is really funny.[Screenshot collage of Claude talking to a group of four young girls in the colosseum. They say in turn (doesn't matter which of them you talk to): "We're..." "...members of the..." "...Sir Glorias Fan Club!" "But he lost in the first round.]The Lord Dias Fan Club: Formerly the members of the Sir Glorias Fan Club. A group of ladies standing around the left side of the arena. Sir Glorias lost his first match, so obviously they need a new obsession to cheer for. If you try to pickpocket them, you'll notice they're all carrying portraits of Dias. Easy shift of allegiances. [Screenshot of Rena on the way back to her seat in the colosseum just in time to see a woman in the audience screaming in Japanese, "Ah! Dias-sama!"]"Lord Dias": You can only see this lady in a Rena story if you don't have anyone else in your party other than Claude and Rena. She just says "Oooh! Dias!" in English. But the "Dias-sama" in Japanese slayed me. The guy next to her is a Claude fan, you can see the full dialogue here.[Screenshot of an NPC in the corner of the bar saying "Dias was incredible, but I was more intrigued by that Claude kid."]More Claude fans: There are a bunch more NPCs in the tavern who were really impressed by Claude. I inserted most of them into this fic, so let the above gentleman represent them all.[Screenshots of Dias at the Front Lines observation deck, Rena talking to two soldiers near him. 1) Dias is not in the party yet. The soldier closest to Rena is saying, "Oh, wow! It's the Armory Contest champion." 2) Dias is now in the party. The same soldier is saying, "The Armory Contest champion is just at another level. You can feel an aura different from normal people."]More Dias fans: A couple of star-struck Dias fans at the Front Line Base. Or rather, one star-struck Dias fan and his patient long-suffering buddy. The soldier on the left squeals a lot more in Japanese (the "Oh, wow!" is actually an excited "Wa wa!"), and his friend on the right is like "wow even you tell the truth every so often", implying that this guy has been going on at length about a Dias sighting before this. It's too bad you can't make Dias the leader at this specific part of the game even when he's in your party in SO2R. Would've been hilarious to see a different response from the soldier when Dias himself is talking to him.[/READ-MORE]There are more fans in the game that I didn't screencap or fit into the story. But if you play SO2R, keep an eye out for them, and have fun talking to everyone before, during and after the tournament! Also, I totally didn't expect this to line up - at least in my timezone - but happy birthday Claude!! (January 23, Space Date 347 - or year 2433 if I didn't mess up my math).
This is basically what happened at the beginning of the game, isn't it?

[image: very scribbly pencil-like digital doodles. Transcript below.] Ronixis (laughing and cheering with crew and then pointing authoritatively at Claude): let's check this planet out! whoo whoo claude you're coming with meClaude (concerned): with all due respect Admiral I don't think that's a good ideaRonixis (sad and pouty and pointing his index fingers together, with Kurtzman and other crew members unruffled behind him): boohoo but I'm old let me have my funClaude (unamused): .........[several hours later]Ronixis (sobbing): CLAUDE!! CLAUDE!!! IT'S ALL MY FAULT...!!Science Officer: With all due respect Admiral it sort of is [sometime later in the Shingo Forest](Equipment Menu showing Claude has nothing equipped except for an Ugly Accessory. Next to it is Claude in the Shingo Forest wearing nothing but a belt and holster with the phase gun, looking down at himself and screaming in alarm, with a mandrake-like Ugly Accessory acting like a censor for his lower half. There is also note saying that he must still have his phase gun.) [much later in Arlia Village]Claude (lying face down on the ground and either crying or drooling): oof... oogh... my stomach...Westa: Rena. quick, while the Hero of Light is stuffed and can't escape!! we'll make sure he saves Expel!!Rena: Got it, Mom!! Yes, I started another SO2R game to fill in some gaps in the Flavour Text documentation.1) I was saying to my friend who is an orange, you know, the opening of Claude's story does seem like Claude's recklessness is what transports him from Milocinia/Milokeenia to Expel, but it's also interesting that you later discover (in flashback) that he actually didn't want to go down and recommended against it. The conversation between him and his dad is pretty much what I summarized above. I'm not even kidding.2) I was going through the menu to make sure Claude came with Dexterity/Nimble Fingers and was like "oh yeah [because this isn't New Game+ anymore], I'm completely naked." Then I found an Ugly Accessory after a battle. This accessory does nothing, but I equipped it on him anyways since I was in the screen and had nothing to do. It seemed like it could provide some level of modesty.3) While adding to my Flavour Text notes, I laughed at how I had captured this Camp Menu reminder-hint from the equivalent part of Rena's story on what to do at this point of the game.[Screenshot of Ellipsus text doc that reads: After stuffing Claude full of food - Rena is running! Rena: I need to tell the village chief about the Hero of Light!chat message at 3:39PM: it's like they stuffed him so he can't get away]Westa's brilliant plan all along. I do believe my sis and I used to periodically crack this kind of joke back in the olden days of PS1 SO2, actually.I can't believe this is my first art post of 2025, haha.
I am vibrating with excitement, I finally got my hands on a copy of the Japanese SO2R collectors edition... which has a 3-vol collection of the voice actor scripts in the game organized by Expel / Nede / PAs. The labelling of the scenarios with numbers for every line is intense. If you're familiar with how many different combos and variations of scenes and randomized lines you can get in the game... file organization and also book layout must have been fun 😂
Had a good laugh the other day when I was making notes on work resourcing and realized I typoed someone's name into the name of a character in an RPG I've been obsessively (re)playing since August. Dias is looking close to overloaded! Are all these items really due Mon?? Please advise so we can get him some support before he Firebird Shockwave/Phoenix Blasts the office in a tirade!!
Apropos of nothing, here's Dias complaining about a coworker.
Having fun attempting a Dias-recruitment-only playthrough on New Game+ and my finest Tournament of Arms/Armory Contest performance ever 😂
[image: screenshot from Star Ocean The Second Story R of the final match of the Lacuer Armory Contest. Dias faces Claude in the arena of Lacuer's colosseum with the audience, including Rena, watching in the background. The Arena Announcer is shouting, "Here it is! The moment you've all been waiting for! The explosive conclusion to the Lacuer Armory Contest!"]The final match of the Lacour Tournament of Arms/Lacuer Armory Contest is a fixed story battle, so we already know what's going to happen. But I haven't personally been this excited to get to the finals in decades! A little backgroundSo I started another SO2R game, planning to recruit only Dias. The purpose is to force the game to make him say something during the random-party-member-pipes-up segments. (That said, I may recruit Welch too just so that I do have the option of a fourth party member, since she shouldn’t randomize into any story scenes and therefore won’t block Dias’ talking. And I can get some PAs and endings I didn’t pick up already.) The main reason I am doing this is to get to Nede, make Rena enter Cooking Master until Slime Battle comes up, and force Dias to talk in the audience. Because in all my years of playing SO2, I have seen literally every Expellian say something except for Dias. If he doesn’t have a line there, then… that was a lot of effort, lol. But I figured I’d find other things to amuse me along the way anyways. Which is this post.Widdle babby master swordsman To make the playthrough faster, I did New Game+ with no level reset. Rena and Claude are terrifying level 235 and 255 forces of nature who completely destroy everything they come across, and could probably obliterate the planet if they really wanted to. Dias was not in my last game, so he appeared at his normal level 35. Aww lookit the cute widdle master swordsman. We have to protect the widdle babby Dias! I think pretty much everyone who does this is super amused at the powerful Rena and baby Dias playthrough. Any time Dias gripes about other people slowing him down, I'm like "Don't be ridiculous, Dias. If they sneeze too hard they'll kill you by accident."[screenshot of a New Game+ playthrough showing the Camp Menu in Japanese with Rena at Level 235 and Dias at Level 25.](Instead of toggling between Japanese Claude voice actors this playthrough, I've been toggling between Japanese and English for language practice.)…who still slaughters meOf course, gamewise we can't get around storywise power moves, so Claude still gets annihilated by Dias in the Tournament of Arms/Armory Contest. However, this was the first time I've ever had the opportunity to face Dias in the actual tournament with a max 9999 HP, max level 255 Claude with all skills maxed out. I was like, hey, Claude’s AI might actually have a feasible shot at triggering the breaker scene!! To be honest, I didn’t think it was likely at all, since the AI isn’t always the smartest/most consistent. But at the very least Claude should be able to take more than 1 hit. So I was excited to see how long he'd last. The results [READ-MORE]And he did! He lasted five hits!! Yaay!![Two screenshots. In the first a 9999 HP Claude is being attacked by Dias with Crescent Cross. In the second, Claude is lying face-down at Dias' feet. The text "You were wiped out..." appears above]He probably could have lasted longer, except after the Tournament started I realized to my horror that I forgot to check his AI tactics. And I saved over my file from before the Tournament started so I couldn't do anything about it!!After the tournament ended, I went to the menu to see what his AI had to work with[Screenshot of Tactics - Strategy screen showing Rena set to "Focus on healing allies" and Claude set to "Attack them with everything!"]Hmm, his tactics were set to the one I would have wanted. But he didn’t use any of his killer moves/special arts in his matches. That’s weird. Why didn’t he—oh. Oops.[Screenshot of Claude's Special Arts/Spells screen showing that he has nothing set at all, aside from an inaccessible Mirror Blade for when he's turned into an Assault Action team member. You can see his impressive stats, 9999 HP / 999MP and so on.]I was kind of stunned when I toggled to this screen. I… forgot to even give him any special arts at all. He’s been like this since the beginning of the game when he joined me. So his AI couldn't access anything in his match against Dias. I never noticed because he’s so powerful he was killing everything in one poke in normal battles and boss battles. I was very ashamed of myself. Forgive me my oshi, I have failed you. After some thought, I started over. Reloaded the New Game+, this time actually blasting through the game, like skipping cutscenes and everything. And trying not to get distracted with my usual silly shenanigans and obsessively talking to everyone, hahaha. It actually went pretty fast, and soon enough I was at the tournament again. Also out of spite I removed all of Dias' Special Arts when he's with Rena in Mars Village before the tournament.[Screenshot of Dias' Special Arts/Spells screen showing that he has nothing set at all. You can also see how puny his party member version stats are compared to Claude, 2500 HP / 250 MP and so on.]Not like it'd do anything, since party member Dias and Tournament Boss Dias are two different things, but it amused me.So, second try! I gave Claude AI all my fave killer moves to use. Especially Sword of Life, very important here.[Screenshot of Claude's Special Arts screen showing a setup with Helmetbreak-Air Slash and Sword of Life-Dragon Roar combo links.]Second attempt, during their other non-finale matches, Claude AI was happily spamming Helmetbreak and Air Slash. Dias did only normal attacks (since it's his Special Arts-less party member self). In the finale, for some reason, Claude only did normal attacks. And as you can see Tournament Boss Dias has no problem using his Special Arts.[Screenshot of Dias slashing a shocked-looking Claude with Crescent Cross. Claude is at 94 HP and close to death.]I was like, what the heck, Claude! You have four perfectly good killer moves, why are you not using them when you most need to??But I was smart this time and had a save before Claude gets locked out of your party. So I threw Sword of Life into every single slot.[Screenshot of Claude's Special Arts screen showing a setup packed with Sword of Lifes linked to each other.]Finally. Claude AI started spamming Sword of Life.[Screenshot of Claude executing Sword of Life with its distinctive glowing green swirling energy, simultaneously healing himself and knocking Dias back.]Of course he still died. He didn't make much of a dent into Dias either. But he definitely lasted longer than he's ever lasted in my experience! Long story short, I feel like the only way to trigger the breaker with Dias is to control Claude yourself.[/READ-MORE]Rare scenes when your party is only Rena and Claude [READ-MORE]At this point in the game, you can have Celine, Ashton and Precis in the party as well to cheer Claude on in the audience. The vast majority of players will probably have at least Celine in the party. But if you intentionally (or somehow accidentally, but it's very unlikely) didn't recruit anyone, you'll get to see some things that won't appear otherwise. For one, Rena and Claude have extended conversations in between Claude’s matches. And, for another, you amusingly hear people in the audience arguing over whether Claude or Dias is going to win. I liked being able to check the dialogue in Japanese as well.[Screenshot of Rena in the midst of returning to her seat in the stands. She's looking down when she overhears a man in the audience exclaim, "Daaaang! That Claude guy is in the zone! He's got this one in the bag!"]Here's the dialogue in English and Japanese Man: Daaang! That Claude guy is in the zone! He's got this one in the bag! Woman: You think so? I don't know, I think Dias is the odds-on favorite here...at least as far as I'm concerned. Woman: Oooh! Dias! [original Japanese with my attempt at a more literal Japanese translation. You can see the fun the translator(s) had with making it sound more colloquial.] 男: すげえよ!あのクロードって奴!絶対優勝間違いなだぜ!Man: Incredible! That Claude guy! He's definitely gonna win this whole thing! 女: あら、そうかしら。わたしはディアス様もいいセンいってると思うけど (music note)Woman: Oh, I'm not so sure about that. As for me, Dias-sama also has good points, that's what I think. 女: あつ!ディアス様!Woman: Ahh! Dias-sama! Dias-sama lmao. Clearly yet another member of the Dias fanclub, along with the groupies from the Sir Glorias fanclub who converted into Dias fans after Sir Glorias lost his first match. (They don't actually say anything about Dias but you can pickpocket Dias' portrait from every single one of them.) I will at some point make a post about the Claude fanclub (all the Claude fans you can find stemming from the events of the tournament).[/READ-MORE]In conclusion,[Screenshot of Claude and Rena in the waiting/recovery room. Dias is saying to Claude, "You were better than I ever expected. I haven't had to put 100 percent into a fight in ages."]This was the first time in my life that this line didn't sound patronizing. Amazing! Now, let's move on with the story, haha.
At last!! I mastered SO2R Cooking Master!! 😤 (~1week ago, but didn't collect screenshots/make post till now.)
Also saw an extended Seafood Battle commentary which I'd never (to my memory) seen because I never had the right audience in PS1 or SE to trigger the full thing. Some cute lore on Claude's family. Still delights me how much this game can offer with discoveries like this after all these years!

[image: Screenshot of Claude in the elaborate Cooking Master stadium under spotlights, festive banners, and an audience as the challenger. He faces a penguin, the host Yarma who looks like a white-haired bearded demon king in long red robes, and a short-haired chef in denim overalls. Yarma, Demon Food God announces him as the competitor, describing him as "Claude, leader of the Youth Seafood Chefs' Team!" The rest of the party sits in the audience watching.]Star Ocean 2 has a very well-deserved reputation for its in-depth and ridiculously addictive item creation system. This system is leveraged in its Cooking Master minigame, a super blatant/obvious tribute to Iron Chef, down to an over-the-top host (here, Food God Yarma taking the role of Chairman Kaga) who waxes poetry over the ingredients. Any playable character who has learned the Cooking specialty can enter, and they all get, and react to, funny chef titles (I previously posted the old PS1 ones for Dias, Claude, Rena and Leon here. I prefer the original PS1 translation in this situation because I think it's funnier than the new one... at least in part because its stilted-ness makes it sound even more amusing to my ear).Little me extra loved it because this was during the heyday of Iron Chef’s glory in North America. Star Ocean 2 was released in English in North America in 1999, and coincidentally Iron Chef was picked up and dubbed by Food Network that very year. So my sister and I understood all the references when we played it. We have so many fond memories of things like the two of us crying with laughter over Dias screaming “How?! Can it be!!” while dashing around the Cooking Master stadium making wilted salads and rotten sashimi and whatever. (Sadly Second Evolution onwards changed/dropped the Item Creation failure lines, and honestly SO2R makes success so easy now that my characters rarely fail anyways. Suffice to say I miss watching Dias screaming “How?! Can it be!!” while churning out failure items in general.)In SO2R, they made a ton of things easier, but they actually made Cooking Master harder. Instead of it being simply an extended Item Creation (going into the menu and selecting/combining ingredients), it’s now a rhythm game. At first I was incredibly dismayed because I (me, the actual human player) have next to no sense of rhythm. This meant that it didn’t matter how powerful my characters’ Cooking skill levels were, or how talented they were with Sense of Taste and whatnot - because my timing is terrible, I kept missing and my poor people kept failing and they were all getting stressed out and panicking and buckling under the pressure of the competition. I looked online for tips and there are actually a lot of players crying/complaining about it and people saying stuff like “turn off the sound and just stare” lol. I was in despair. I thought never again would I defeat Food God Yarma and take my place in the halls of the Fun City Cooking Master Arena!! Also I was annoyed I wouldn’t get the achievements/missions related to Cooking Master, including Ashton’s new ultimate weapon. Then about a week or so ago I realized three things. There are actually shortcut buttons to select ingredients really quickly so you don’t lose time which they don't tell you about, you have to look and spot the little text below the character when they’re standing at their cooking battle station; I can hit the circles better if I’m looking carefully at the screen combined with listening to the little dings of the ingredients popping up onto the screen and mimicking the sound pattern; and I forgot that the Courage skill actually is useful for this mini game. (Courage is essentially a skill that - to my memory - did nothing except give you access to the Pickpocketing specialty.) So characters with maxed out Courage stress less and don’t freak out/freak out much less at every little thing, including when they’re actually doing well. So armed with my new powers I blasted through Cooking Master. Claude kicked butt with his steak-making prowess and he defeated all his opponents and triumphed over Food God Yarma to become Cookery Master once again. Yaaaay. Here’s Claude absolutely destroying Puffy in Slime Battle with his slime-cooking skills.[Screenshot of Surprise Entry Puffy VS Leader of the Youth Seafood Chefs' Team Claude. Puffy has maxed out pressure and she's sweating like crazy. Claude has no pressure whatsoever and is in the midst of his idle animation, so he looks like he's giving her side-eye from his end of the kitchen arena. The screen reads "Pressure KO" in giant white letters glowing with a blue halo.]Look at all the cheese Claude made in this Meat Battle! Lol (I actually managed to catch the Perfect Bonus text here). Anyways if me with all my timing thumbness could do it, I hope this gives someone else hope, haha.[Screenshot of Restaurant Boss Gantz VS Claude. Gantz has a small pressure bar while Claude has known, and is surrounding by a ring of successful cheese dishies that say "Perfect Bonus".]I even had time to sashay over to my opponents’ side to hassle talk to them. I like how impressed Yarma is when you do this.[Screenshot of Claude talking to Food God Yarma in the middle of a Full Course Battle competition while they're both grabbing ingredients. Yarma is saying, "Oho! What splendid chutzpah you have, to be talking to your opponent in the midst of a match!"]I also gave all my other characters a turn at winning as well. Which leads me to the actual reason I wanted to make this post: The extended Seafood Battle commentary!I encountered something that existed since the original PS1 game, but I don’t remember seeing, because I never had the exact combination of characters sitting in the audience during a Seafood Battle to trigger the full thing. Again, another example of how you can play this game a bajillion times and still see new things.Non-competing party members watch the battle from the audience. For a few battles, they will actually talk. Slime Battle is the one all the fans remember because a random Expellian party member will yell something indignantly, and then all the non-Rena Nedians will go "..."The other main one is the Seafood Battle. It’s actually a multipart conversation that progresses depending on who’s in your party. Here’s what I had documented back many many years ago. PS1 translation. [Seafood Battle] Food God and Prince of Darkness Yarma: Among the natural bounty of Nede, this is the most esoteric ingredient!! The bounty of the sea, grown along the shore. For me, this food also brings back few but fond memories. O the sweetness of ganze sea urchin!! O the texture of abalone!! It brings back memories of the smell of the salt air from the days of my youth … As time passes, the cuisine that you two will create today using your culinary skills, will certainly be recreated as wonderful memories!! [If Rena is in the audience]Rena: (?) What is this 'ganze'?[If Claude is competing, that's as far as you'll get. No one replies to Rena and the battle starts. But if Claude is in the audience, he'll answer her.]Claude: I think it's a kind of sea urchin. [If Ashton is also in the audience, this next part then triggers]Ashton: (lightbulb) Is it like the morning star?Claude: (sweatdrop) Yeah, that's right. And that’s as much as I’d caught and transcribed back then. In SO2R, I also had Precis in the audience (I didn’t bother transcribing Yarma again, you get the idea):[Screenshot of the in-game log overlaid on the Cooking Master competition scene showing the text transcript as follows.]Rena: What’s an abalone?Claude: I think it’s a type of mollusk.Ashton: So kind of like an oyster?Claude: Um, yeah, more or less.Precis: Rock on, Mr. Science! You really know your stuff.Claude: Aw, it’s nothing. My mom happens to like them, although I’m not that big on them. Neither is my dad.Since it’s completely random which ingredient you get for the challenge and you can't change your language settings during the competition, I had to hack and slash my way through Cooking Master a bunch more times just so I could see the entire Japanese of this convo. My translation attempt (as usual aiming for more literal so you can compare with the official translations): [Screenshot of the in-game log overlaid on the Cooking Master competition scene showing the Japanese text transcript as follows.] Rena: ...ガンゼってなに?What’s ‘ganze’? Claude: 「うに」のことじゃないかな。I think it means "uni". [edible part of a sea urchin] Ashton: モーニングスターみないな奴?Something like a morningstar? Claude: そ、そうだね。Ah, yeah. Precis: 博学じゃん!!さっすが。Super well-read aren'tcha!! As expected. Claude: ...いや、母さんが妙に好きでさ。ぼくも父さんも別に大して...。... Not at all, my mother oddly likes it. Me and my father aren’t really big on it... Again, you can see that original PS1 translation is more technically accurate; SE/SO2R translation sounds more natural. This seems to be the full conversation chain, unless another party member I didn't recruit this time around creates an additional link. It can't be Opera, Ernest or Bowman, so it's either Celine or, highly unlikely, Dias. Or no one else and this is the end of the conversation. The last option seems most likely.I thought this was a very cute little piece of lore! So Ilia likes uni (or abalone depending on the translation...), Claude and Ronixis don’t, haha. Uni does tend to be an acquired taste. You can definitely taste the ocean...

Then we forgot about it. Then we came back to it this past week. I've been periodically running into fanart and comics of Claude C. Kenni from Star Ocean 2 with the phrase スポーティーな瞳 ("sporty eyes"). I can count the instances on one hand, but specific enough that I was like, ?? My Japanese isn't great (though it's much better than when I was a little kid), and I couldn't for the life of me understand the usage in context. Like, there was a vague sense of it being used for a particular reason, but it also seemed rather nonsensical, like something was missing. orange, whose Japanese is excellent, was also baffled. She was like, "Is it maybe a reference to something from the game??" and I was like, "Not that I'm aware of?? The only time I can remember anyone talking about Claude's eyes is the priest in Arlia's church and I'm 2000% sure he doesn't say they're sporty lmao". Then we moved on to other things. Anyways, I recently encountered another illustration with this, and orange had the brilliant idea of… looking it up, haha.Explanation on Nicovideo.jp | on PixivSo basically, it's a Japanese meme that came from a circa 2001 four-panel gag comic appearing in Vol 7 of the Star Ocean The Second Story gekijoh books. As it says on the cover, this is part of the Enix Supercomic Gekijoh series, essentially officially-sanctioned fancomic anthologies. Which I actually owned in my other life, I just couldn't read most of it when I was a kid. I actually remember this comic too! The creator, Sakamoto Taro, has a very distinctive inking style. The comic is titled "Sporty Eyes". The joke involves Noel and Bowman wanting to sneak peeks at Chisato and Rena changing, but Claude, instead of being unobtrusive, boldly/blatantly pops up from the bottom of the window to look. This references two things: how on PS1, character portraits animate in from the bottom of the screen (which they amusingly brought back in SO2R, if you choose to make the status screens display the original PS1 art, possibly in part because of this meme); and Claude's bio that appears in the instruction manual, which inexplicably closes with the following line that apparently also left Japanese fans scratching their heads:「サラサラとした金髪とスポーティな瞳が印象的。」Roughly, "He has silky blond hair and sporty eyes". [Screenshot of a chat dialogue. Seek them out. Claude C. Kenni One of the main characters of this game, Claude is a newly commissioned Ensign of the Earth Federation, and the eldest son of the hero, Ronixis J. Kenni. Although Claude does have respect for his father, he is struggling to forge his own identity. He is noted for his frizzy blond hair and an impish gleam in his eyes. Sex: MaleAge: 19Birthday: January 23/Sign: AquariusHeight: 175 cm(5'9")/Weight: 68 kg(150lb.)Good at: Being late, troublemaking.Likes: Food (all kinds), computer games.Dislikes: The profession of Federation officer. I had to wade through a lot of explanations of sporty eyes in order to find it. The bio: https://ameblo.jp/beki-0313/entry-11205371725.html The other details: http://toss.velvet.jp/media/change-system/triple/cr.htm Roughly (aiming for more literal translation, following Japanese word order where possible): This game's main character, Earth Federation forces' newly-appointed Ensign. Hero Ronixis J. Kenni's eldest [only/first-born] son. He respects his father but, on the flipside, as the hero's son his own existence is fading/blurring [being overshadowed] which distresses him. Smooth gold hair and sporty eyes is the impression [he has]. Good at: Being late, slacking, martial artsThings he likes: Food in general, computer gamesThings he dislikes: Being a Federation officer, studying in generalThe type [of partner] he likes: Lively, cheerful, energetic girls *The English translates "長男" as eldest son, which is technically correct, but in Japanese it doesn't necessarily indicate there are other children. On the actual screen where you choose Claude as your protagonist, he's described in both Japanese and English as the only son of Ronixis J. Kenni. You can see it here in this comparison of PS1, SE, and SO2R intro screens. The original Japanese text can be seen in the screenshot of the ameblo URL linked above, which says "一人息子" (only son). (As a point of interest—fans of SO1 may recall that Claude's mom, Ilia, is actually Ronixis' second wife; his first wife died of an illness well before the beginning of SO1.)**格闘術 is specifically hand-to-hand combat/unarmed martial arts, which reinforces the idea that Claude only started using swords after arriving on Expel. The end of the mystery (aside from who came up with "sporty eyes" and why it's in the bio like that. I have theories. lol). Also props to the translator several decades ago who probably struggled with how to render "sporty eyes"; you did your best. But a few things sure got left out, haha.
A round up of a selection of Star Ocean The Second Story R posts. Fun/interesting things I documented for reference, handy for ideas and inspiration for fanworks!
These are all specifically compilations of transcripts (sometimes with screenshots), translations. Plus my walls-of-text commentary.
[Screenshot from Star Ocean The Second Story R. The dream team (Claude, Ernest, Dias, Bowman) are standing around the save point outside the warehouses by the entrance of the port-town of Herlie/Harley. Claude is saying "I'm starting to feel a bit hungry." Dias replies "Agreed."]I have spammed many SO2R posts over the last few months, at least a few of them with transcripts and collections that may be helpful for reference, e.g., people making fanworks! Rounding them all up here!Special shout out to theoreticalconstruct for so much amazing support on quite a few of these, especially the Flavour Text! Between our multiple games and recruitment combinations all this progress wouldn't have been possible.SO2R Flavour TextA compilation of the new flavour text that pops up in various places throughout the game, like the screenshot above. When I first started seeing these while playing SO2R, I found it not only charming but brilliant. Gemdrops' approach to add new dialogue in this way allows them to supplement instead of changing anything in the original script. There are so many fascinating nuggets for character interactions and backstories, and it adds to the voice of each character, really allowing you to flesh out an image of their personality the way the original game did with its PAs and randomizing characters into story dialogue. A lot of the new text has special triggers, appear only at certain (narrative) points in the game, and/or may change depending on the combination of characters you have in your party. And quite a bit of it is random as well. There's... a lot of text. You can also tell that there were multiple translators on this because there doesn't seem to have been a style guide, though the translators are clearly trying to stay true to the voice of each character.I'm really delighted with how much has been collected so far in here, and a huge part of it is thanks to my amazing collaborators! Also lots of lolling at the things we're finding, hahaha. I have no idea how complete this is; it still feels like there's a ton we haven't gotten yet. Also I'd say it's more complete in the later parts of the game because we didn't really start getting obsessive about it till later, so we'd have to start new games (actual new games, not new game+) to get some of the missing things.Expel's Menace: Blocking my characters + pickpocket lines/items compilationTo be fair, this is really Expel's Menace (Rena) + the Menace from Earth (Claude), but the title is getting too long. This is all the dialogue when your protagonist annoys the rest of your party members, as well as what you can pickpocket from them. It's maybe 80-90%+ complete? I think the main things missing are: Doublechecking a few lines between Claude and Rena's story where entire conversations are happening. A few after-the-Arms lines which I missed due to the small window of time. If you recruited Opera but not Ernest, what happens to some of the lines Cave of Trials/Maze of Tribulations, when all but two people are forced out of your party I'd seen a lot of these in the original PS1 and PSP, but there were still lots of details that were new to me, many little funny and surprising moments. Some interesting findings: It's always fascinating to see what the characters have on them, and now that everyone has three item instead of one there's more to think about. It's usually their favourite food, plus two other character class/narrative appropriate things (e.g., a weapon they can use, something that reflects their personality), but sometimes it's different. Sometimes characters interestingly have other people's favourite foods or equipment. And no food in Armlock, everyone is very serious business there. Which is also funny since that town has so many cafe PAs. Annoying your characters is way more interesting early in the game/on Expel than on Energy Nede. There are almost no walk paths on Nede. Sometimes there are full-on conversations, even voiced ones. Bowman has a lot of interesting dialogue. Several people have two places they can be found in during PAs. I don't remember if it was like this in the original PS1 game; I only remembered Precis sometimes being unreachable. Found something fascinating with Dias at the Frontlines. He's the only playable character you can pickpocket there in both stories, since you can't enter PA mode in this area. After seeing almost everything, there's a lot of gold, but I think my favourites are Claude at the Bouncing Penguin, and stealing twice from Leon. The Field of Love: the hostage, Claude's visionCompilation of every possible hostage, with screenshots. For Claude's story, dialogue for every possible character who can appear in his vision. Hostages are completed. Missing only one person for Claude's vision.A performance for the Lady of the DanceScreenshots of every character's line and portrait when they're selected to play music for the goddess in the Cave of Trials/Maze of Tribulations. Missing just three people.TranslationsThese are full translations with commentary.
