Louis Braille’s Earlier Ideas, Ranked:

7. Musical Reading

Braille got Parisian street performers to “play” books by assigning each letter a note on the 🪗

The ensuing cacophony was unlistenable. However, it paved the way for experimental, atonal music which people now claim they enjoy to sound sophisticated

Louis Braille's Earlier Ideas, Ranked - The Squeaky Wheel

In 19th-century France, 15-year-old Louis Braille invented his famous tactile codex while still a student at a school for the blind, but Braille wasn’t the first thing he tried. These are our favorites of his earlier ideas: 8. Lickbooks Making all the letters of lickbooks (livres de la langue) taste different was too time-consuming. Plus, […]

Today two things happened:

1. My op-ed in the #Ottawa Citizen was published, in which I rant about the inability to successfully report problems to the City/OC Transpo: https://ottawacitizen.com/opinion/report-a-problem-city-of-ottawa

2. I heard back from OC Transpo (via my Councillor's office) that they've fixed their web feedback form and are working on further updates per my suggestions. (Apparently you *can* select "O-Train (Trillium Line)" for Confederation Line issues)

Akben-Marchand: Need to report a problem to the City of Ottawa? Good luck with that

Ottawa City Hall's whole system for reporting issues — from potholes to construction hazards to broken transit pay terminals — is rotten.

Triumph of the day!
Google Maps finally (after ~ 2 years of pushing) accepted a map edit that changes driving instructions from
“Drive past your destination, make two left turns, drive through a gas station lot, you have reached your destination”
to
“Turn left. You have reached your destination”

Had a very satisfying experience with the City of #Ottawa yesterday.

I noticed that the waste calendar that I was subscribed to listed items (bin colour, garbage week, etc.) in such a way that the stuff I wanted to know about was often cut off in the summary views. e.g. “Garbage, green bin, yard trimmings, and blue bin” would appear as “Garbage, green bin, yard trimmings, a…” and I would have to open the item to see what I was recycling that week.

I suggested that they list the stuff that changes week to week *first*, and leave the stuff that goes out every week (like the green bin) to the end of the list.

I got an email back the same day, basically saying "great idea, we changed the calendar”.

Yay, CIty staff! 👍🏻👍🏻

@christinegrothe #counselingmastodon #squeakywheel #gradstudent Sounds like a rough week (permanent reality?). Hoping the chronic conditions ease or the institutions bend.

On a less severe note, after about a month of bronchitis, I'm realizing what it means to be in an industry without sick leave.
