The ending of Back to the Future is truly depressing. Marty changes the past and essentially returns to a family of strangers, losing the people he knew and loved.

The narrative of the movie downplays this by suggesting they are now "better" people because they are more social successful in life.

At least he owned a new car, that made that all totally worth it.
