"When some of #Rabbi Mia Simring’s congregants named themselves The Very Narrow Bridge Congregation, they weren’t just referring to the anthemic #Hebrew song “Gesher Tsar Meod” or the teaching from Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav on which it is based.

They were also alluding to their status as inmates on #RikersIsland, #NewYorkCity’s largest #jail.

“Everybody there knows that they are separated from the rest of their lives by an actual very narrow bridge,” Simring said.

So when it came time to name the jail’s new #siddur — perhaps the first ever #Jewish prayer book compiled expressly for the use in a correctional facility — the choice was obvious. “The Very Narrow Bridge: A Rikers Island Siddur” entered use earlier this summer."

New on Rikers Island: a Jewish prayerbook designed with incarcerated congregants in mind

Running a little behind on #ShavuotLive commentary (I did sleep a little --- but left the zoom running in my sleep in the hopes I would get some #Torah inspiration by osmosis).

For hour #11 we heard from Martín Di Maggio (from the The Spinoza Havurah and Humanistic Judaism UK) who spoke about "An Unbound Siddur: How a Person-Centred Non-Theistic Siddur Is Coming Together"

I was obviously biased (I work often with Martin and am a big fan of his liturgy), but session in particular was a delight, especially see fellow participants in the session get to experience, for the first time, hearing non-theistic liturgy that fits the rhythmic structure of the traditional liturgy (making it possible to use traditional nusach and other tunes).

I've been using the same, small hardcover edition of Siddur Sim Shalom for decades. The pages are soft from turning. I love how there's a wine stain in one place, or handwritten notes on cantillation in another, and how the book opens naturally to the first pages of minḥa or ma'ariv.

But over the years some pages have gotten a bit loose, and I'm starting to fear the binding will self-destruct. So I just got myself the paperback version of the same #siddur, and I'm all excited about that because I am a giant nerd. 🤓

Unfortunately, the print in the paperback version seems a bit smaller to me, at a time in my life when what I kinda need the opposite. The next one I buy will probably be one of those editions that has super-large type and I'll need a stand to hold it.

What a lovely, contemporary #Sephardi #siddur I found this morning, issued under a #CreativeCommons license and beautifully #illustrated !!

I wanted to share this absolutely remarkable piece of literature

Brin Solomon (it/its) has spent the past four years creating the first volume of Siddur Davar Ḥadash, an non-denominational Ashkenazi siddur. It uses gender neutral language in both English and Hebrew in reference to God and Jewish worshippers. In addition, Solomon has excised sexist, ableist, xenophobic, zionist, monarchist, or otherwise demeaning language so as to not be demeaning. And of course, like the original siddur, this siddur is in the public domain.

I highly recommend giving it a look. The dedication that went into this siddur is breathtaking. I can’t wait to see how this develops in further volumes.

Neat #halacha question: can #Jewish Mastodon help?

There's debate, I know, on whether it's kosher to pray from a #siddur #app. For those who say yes (w/distractions turned off), what is the status of the phone while doing so? Is it #kodesh (holy), like an actual siddur is, meaning if you touch something that isn't you have to wash your hands before proceeding? Or is it just a phone, and only the app has special status? Got #sources? Answers here good, there even better!

What is the status of my phone when using it as a siddur?

Occasionally, I find myself using my phone as a siddur (prayer book), particularly when davening (praying) at a Sephardi shul as an Ashkenazi. (They do...
