Digesting Food Studies—Episode 119: Kids’ Lit and Food Insecurity
https://rss.com/podcasts/digesting-food-studies/2681139/

Books for kids can be mirrors and windows, reflecting readers’ own lives or opening up onto those of others. When it comes to issues like hunger and poverty, portrayals in children’s literature have lasting effects on our collective understanding.

Alexia Moyer looks back at food insecurity in The Tin Flute (Bonheur d’occasion) by Gabrielle Roy, while Dian Day gazes forward with “Food Insecurity in Books for Children?” (https://doi.org/10.15353/cfs-rcea.v11i1.654) AND her own graphic novel (with Amanda White), Shy Cat and the Stuff-the-Bus Challenge.

Then, Ruby Harrington shares her thoughts on Dian’s article and the ways in which hunger and poverty need systemic, concerted attention from academics and governance bodies alike.

It’s pretty stormy over here, lots of Angst, unsureness and envy. But we all will work on it and we will grow into the save multi-cat home together 💪
We managed from hiding under the bed all day => wanna be stroked all day long (within 3 days).

Meet Koi!

Our third and final cat of our family. We speculate that Koi is a larger breed of cat, maybe a Maine coon or Norwegian Forest breed at no more than a year old.

We met Koi after finding him in the freezing cold of a November evening on the week of thanksgiving. He was just a kitten (older but still a kitten) skinny, starved, scared and sick. We exhausted our options looking for his previous family, but never found them.

He was sick and had contagious ear mites. Sadly with it being a holiday week all veterinary clinics were closed. We had to quarantine him in our extra bathroom for about two weeks before and while we treated him (after an eventual vet visit) I also did oil drowning of the ear mites which helped a lot especially with the itching.

Koi got his name from his striking and handsome appearance. With a black and white coat and very long whiskers. Hence he looks a like a Koi fish.

Other than his striking appearance, another unique features of Koi is his exclusive vocalization of cooing like a pigeon. With only meowing when he’s very excited.

Generally he keeps to himself, getting along with his sibling cats, but never fully confident in joining in a game of chase or wrestling.

His favorite thing is sleeping at his spot in my bedroom floor on his blanket nest.

Koi has yet to come out of his shell fully and everyday he grows in size and confidence!

Thanks for getting to know Koi!

Kewlona the bobcat is on the move! She seems unsure about the new photographer and his large camera. **ANIMAL FACTS:** In wildlife biology, a female bobcat is referred to as a "queen," while a male bobcat is called a "tom."
