Not working means we can't be nearly as generous as we'd like with the causes we support. But I was pleased to make a small donation to #Sefaria this year. It is amazing how often I rely on that resource, and how valuable it's become to me. I wish I could do more.

Sefaria: a Living Library of Jewish Texts Online

The largest free library of Jewish texts available to read online in Hebrew and English including Torah, Tanakh, Talmud, Mishnah, Midrash, commentaries and more.

Fin tioårsvideo för #Sefaria. Kolla gärna in projektet om ni inte känner till det. Har hjälpt mig helt otänkbart mycket både att studera och att undervisa. Jag gör alla mina kursmaterial där.

Getting ready for #Shavuot ( #shavuos ) by looking for free online study options ~ would appreciate hearing from folks who know of any open, online #TikkunLeilShavuot groups. For folks studying on their own, #Sefaria has good study guides. Here's one I plan to use ~ The #Mystical Evolution of Tikkun Leil Shavuot - From the #Zohar to R' Yosef Karo: https://www.sefaria.org/sheets/411716?lang=bi

The Mystical Evolution of Tikkun Leil Shavuot - From the Zohar to R' Yosef Karo | Sefaria

A comparative examination of Tikkun Leil Shavuot as seen in the Zohar and then Rabbi Yosef Karo's revival of the practice.

I'm staring at the Leningrad Codex in Sefaria for Gen 46:27. What is the character that I have highlighted? And what does it mean?

「If so, lamah zeh anochi? (translated on #Sefaria as: if so, why do I exist?) #Rivkah asks this when she feels the twins #Esau and #Jacob locked in a struggle in her womb. God answers "two nations are within you, and the older shall serve the younger.”

I keep asking myself: does God truly answer her? Is this all we're meant for in life? To witness the nations that struggle against one another? For one to always triumph over the other? To forget that every single one of us teems with life?

Rivkah's question points out that this struggle harms the very earth we walk on. It damages the hearts and minds of all who carry it.

She deserved a better answer, just like we deserve one now.

But when God is silent, it is the time to create one for ourselves.」

exceptional #sefaria source sheet on #trans people in the #torah https://www.sefaria.org/sheets/125838?lang=bi
Toldot Trans: Tracing a Trans Lineage through the Torah | Sefaria

A source sheet tracing the lineage of transness from our plural and all-encompassing God, through Adam the bi-gendered being, all the way to Rabbi Yochanan the Transfemme, utilizing rabbinic sources, exegetical techniques and faith. The working definition of transness for this source sheet is that a biblical character has "some kind of gender/sex f*ckery going on." These countless examples, in an unbroken chain across millenia, fly in the face of the idea that our "patriarchs" and "matriarchs" model the simple and clear line between "men" and "women" ordained by our "male" God. This is just a taste of the silhouette of queerness and transness in our tradition - a teaser-trailer to whet a pallette, to give the first hint of roots and strength to my trans sisters, brothers and siblings, and to inspire us to find more. To claim ourselves neither outside the tradition, nor simply included as an afterthought -- but central to the entire faith. May the children of Yisrael and Ivrim - the strugglers and crossers - continue to find God in the transition in-between. And may the laugh of Sarah, released in joy when she was told of the transfemininity of Isaac's soul, continue to carry forth, and take form, in our trans children today. May transness always be known as laughter-made-flesh. May our name be an everlasting one, that shall not perish. And may all those in God's image - the sons, the daughters, and those beyond them - find true safety, community, and love.

I was reading something on #Sefaria a while back and I recall the rough outline of the story, but not what text.

It goes like this: there are a few people, rabbis I believe, talking with one another. One says that they are the Mashiach because they can do things like walking through walls and other feats of sorcery. The other rabbi essentially says 'bro I can do that too' and talks about that not being the criteria for Mashiach and it goes from there.

What was I reading? Does anyone know? Send help.

Sincerely,
really trying to remember where I read that one thing

I got a letter!

#Sefaria, a digital library of Jewish literature, is celebrating its 10 year anniversary by letting folks claim a Hebrew letter from the Torah. I know very little about #Hebrew so why not learn about what the letter means, as well as what the word in the verse means. (1/5)
