Day off, my poor back is still rather delicate, but moving around seems to be helping it. Unlike my last day off I was actually able to walk to the cinema and enjoy Mickey 17. Brimming with gallows black humour, I knew Bong Joon Ho would deliver (frankly I'd go see anything he directs, regardless what it is about).

This evening's viewing distraction: Guardans of the Galaxy Vol 3, one of the very few decent Marvel movies of the last couple of years, managing to be fun but also carry a fair emotional punch to it.

Our lead is Major Jeff Cummings who is investigating the deaths but has to deal with the distrustful and superstitious natives…. and their “Canadian” accents. Anyway eventually they manage to do an autopsy and find the brain and spinal cords of the victims are missing...

Sgathaich: Fiend without a Face

There’s always something nice about coming to review an old black and white sci fi film from the 50s. Always a source of inventive outlandish monsters… rather than just throwing CGI mad…

The audio leaves a little to be desired, being only a 2.0 Master, but the visual presentation is absolutely gorgeous! I’ve only ever seen/owned a DVD copy in the past and this #4KUHD is a major step up from that!

Für mich einer der tollsten jemals produzierten Filme
Kein billiges Popcorn Kino, teils anstrengend zu verfolgen und jede einzelne Sekunde der knapp 3 Stunden wert.

ISeems the consensus on The Day the Sky Exploded (1958) is that the birth of Italian SF film was inauspicious (though fitting that it was another production ghost-directed by Mario Bava). I get why many find it dull, but I found it interesting, and there was a fair bit that I enjoyed, especially at the climax, where it achieves a real sense of doom on the ground, and of dark, poetic abstraction in space. A ★★★ review of The Day the Sky Exploded (1958)

As far as I can tell, the general consensus on The Day the Sky Exploded is that the birth of Italian SF film was inauspicious (though fitting that it was yet another production ghost-directed by Mario Bava). I can certainly understand why many have found it dull, but I found it interesting, and there was quite a bit that I really enjoyed, especially at the climax. In many ways, The Day the Sky Exploded is a close, if awkward, cousin to The Day the Earth Caught FIre (1961). If the latter takes place largely in the offices of people trying to understand

I really love how Italian SF films go full-on space opera, low budget be damned. Assignment: Outer Space (1960, aka Space Men) is Antonio Margheriti’s debut, and his strong visual sense is already very much on display. It may not be as deliriously inventive as Battle of the Worlds, but there’s plenty to love all the same, with a cavalcade of visual splendour.

There’s something about Unknown World (1961) that ticks the right boxes for me. It has since I first stumbled upon it while channel surfing years ago. I get why it has the reputation for being dull: it’s an hollow earth story with no monsters or lost civilzations (or really antagonists of any kind), a lot of it takes place in the rather banal interior of the “cyclotram,” and Terry Morse’s direction lies at the intersection of workmanlike and pedestrian.
