Don’t Lecture, Communicate!

Astrophysicist and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson shares some thoughts on why and how scientists should communicate.

💡 Wonderful #SciCommTip by Neil deGrasse Tyson:

"I spend more time than most of my colleagues thinking about what interests the public. That includes exposing myself to a lot of popular #culture. So when the Super Bowl comes on, I’m going to watch it, even if I don’t care much about #football, because the next day everyone is going to be talking about it. And if there’s some bit of #physics I can infuse into that conversation, I’ll do it.

Boost boost boost to anywhere and everywhere‼️‼️‼️ It's not only true for the U.S.! It's true for every information society in the world. In fact it's true for all countries where Antisocial Media and Fake News bloom. So it's a GLOBAL thing.

Last thoughts on #interviews:

🔹If you want to do the interview, prepare well (see AAAS checklist). You'll feel more confident.
🔹The media follow different "rules" in different countries. While it is completely acceptable in Germany to have a journalist send you the full interview for approval, this is a no-go e.g. in the US. Be aware of these differences if you talk to reporters from international media.

A few additional thoughts on #interviews:

🔹BEFORE agreeing to an interview, check out the journalist's previous work.
🔹If you like what you see, find out what she wants, how she wants it, what the goal of the overarching story is, etc. If any of the conditions don't appeal to you, don't do the interview. Otherwise your discomfort will show and you won't be happy with the result.

You're a #scientist & would love to interact more with the #media, but feel a bit uneasy when it comes to #interviews? Two tips from me:

1️⃣ Get support from your trusted #SciComm officer.
2️⃣ Follow this AAAS checklist: https://www.aaas.org/resources/communication-toolkit/media-interviews?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D11618764387247599688339073891305458243%7CMCORGID%3D242B6472541199F70A4C98A6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1705679065

Examples:

Scientist: „COVID cases are rising.“
Public: „Do we need to get a jab? Mask?“
➡️ Ask non-scientist friends which questions they may have. Formulate answers to these.

S: „We found a new type of cell in the liver.“
P: „Uhum??“
➡️ Oftentimes a scientific discovery will not be relevant for individuals. It may still be appealing to people with an interest in #science. Clearly state the relevancy for your field („We finally understand how …, which is important b/c…“)!

#SciCommTip 11 [1/2]
You're a #scientist & want to communicate to the public? Excellent! This is my most important tip for you:

🔵 Scientists usually spend most of their time thinking & talking about the "WHAT?" (e.g. describing a new type of [x]).

🔵 Lay people, however, want to know about the "SO WHAT?". Essentially, you've gotta explain how your results affect THEM or why they should care.

This holds for every format (#interview, #SocialMedia post, …)

#SciCommTip 10 [10/10]

Remember: It's not the number of followers that determines your success in building your academic brand on #SocialMedia. It's who is following you.

And don’t fret if your account doesn’t take off as quickly as hoped for. Building brand takes time. It’s likely to pay off, though, in the form of meaningful conversations, a better network, more citations, and possibly funding or positions.

To increase your academic #SocialMedia reach:

1️⃣6️⃣ IMHO, think twice when it comes to political statements.
a) You want to be respected as an expert by followers of any political view.
b) Your institution may not like you being so open…
Some fields of research are quite close to politics; separating your expertise from political statements may not be possible/in your interest in that case. Be aware of this aspect anyhow!
