We’re doing this!
The US Army Corps of Engineers awarded the $691M construction contract for the juvenile salmon downstream fish passage project at Hanson Dam on the Green River. This is a huge milestone reached toward salmon recovery in Puget Sound!

I’ve been working on this since my first day at USACE in 2005. The project went on hold in 2011 due to budget issues. We are back on track, so this will be the biggest project of my career.

Court battle looms over Snake and Columbia Rivers dam operations

Lawyers for conservation groups, Native American tribes, and the states of Oregon and Washington have returned to court to seek changes to dam operations on the Snake and Columbia Rivers. Friday's hearing follows the collapse of a landmark agreement with the federal government to help recover imperiled salmon runs. President Donald Trump last year torpedoed the 2023 deal, in which the Biden administration had promised to spend $1 billion over a decade to help restore salmon while also boosting tribal clean energy projects. The White House called it “radical environmentalism” that could have resulted in the breaching of four controversial dams on the Snake River.

If you're going to look back and watch one legislative hearing outside your zone of interest for this week, I'd suggest SB 5297, which would ban mainstem gillnetting on the lower Columbia

In addition to being a serious threat to local food security, attacking small business, the bill is a direct reallocation of fisheries masquerading as conservation

There is plenty of other context, so here starts a thread

Of course seals and sea lions were hunted by tribes before colonization. Hunting then again, with regulations set on population density and health, would make sense.

We manage hunting deer, elk, and predators on land.

The big issue may end up being using firearms over open water.
