A quiet cloister behind a wooden door near Rome’s Pantheon offers calm meditation, while its frescoes reveal a turbulent past. Although closed to the general public, around 20 Dominican friars still live there and carry out their duties. Art historian Claudio Strinati calls it one of Rome’s largest and most beautiful cloisters. The site sits beside the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, built over an old pagan temple. The convent housed the Roman Inquisition, and was where Galileo Galilei renounced his theories before a panel of judges in 1633.
