Met a #SEAsian in Japan who uses an abbreviation to mask their clearly Islamic name.

I certainly know Indians who hide their family names to avoid caste discrimination (or, in some cases, to hide their association as an upper-caste).

I know that #Japanese people don't perceive Islam as positively as many do Hinduism, unfortunately, and perhaps, they had good reasons to change their name here.

Some fascinating data on #tourism in #Japan

Only 1-2% of #US, #Europe and #Australia visitors stay outside major metro areas (#Kyoto, #Osaka and #Tokyo)

For Asian (#Taiwan, #Korea, #HongKong #SEAsian tourists? 20-40%.

Interesting, according to this data, #Chinese tourists act more like #westerners than Asians.

The worst type of #tourist in #Japan are the westerners who complain about #Chinese tourists (quite often, actually #Taiwanese, #Korean or #SEAsian but they don't know or care to tell the difference) and don't realize that it's actually them who are the most annoying.

I see way more bad or stupid behavior, especially in #Kyoto, from western tourists than Asian tourists.

Here are the details on another amazing #BigBadOnline2024 panel with @tanshaohan and @curiouschimeras!

Euphemisms in a #climate talk - in one #SEAsian country, "anti-corruption" drive is creating "policy uncertainty" that harms progress on the #energytransition.

Of course, the "anti-corruption" drive they are referring to is the arbitrary arrest of environmentalist and human right defenders by an increasingly #authoritarian government.

I almost bought a bag of mixed fresh chiles at the market earlier this evening, just because it had Thai bird chiles in it, but it also had Habañeros, which I probably won’t actually use, so I passed, and just used Aleppo chile flakes I already had. These are pretty mild by Asian standards, but they are very tasty. Being #SEAsian in Southeast #Vermont is such a chore, sometimes. There’s so few of us here, the nearest Asian markets are a minimum of 50 Km/30 mi away. I’m car-free for over 2yrs.
I need some #peanutbutter for certain #SEAsian dishes, but every time I go to the store and think about buying some, I remember it only comes in 1 lb. (454 g) jars, and there’s only one of me, so half the jar will go rancid before I ever get around to eating it, because I don’t like #peanuts enough to eat them frequently. Also, I keep forgetting I need coconut water. #singlelife #sololiving #cookingforone #eatingalone

Observations on food in #Taiwan.

- So many great vegetarian options compared to Japan.
- At the same time. nearly no #Indian/South Asian restaurants - whereas so many in #Japan. Why is that? Lack of diaspora or lack of interest?
- Despite the large #SEAsian diaspora, very few #Indonesian/#Vietnamese restaurants outside migrant neighborhoods.
- #Japanese is definitely the most popular foreign cuisine in Taiwan.

I feel best when I'm wearing #black, because colors are charged with #emotion. Black doesn't make me feel like I have to behave a certain way. If I limit my color to specific #accessories, I can swap them out of a color isn't working for me on any given day. #fashion #LBD #witch

I may love red one day, and not feel up to it the next. I do, however, tend to wear true red red (fuck me red) #lipgloss and red #nailpolish consistently, because surprise, surprise, they suit my #SEAsian complexion.

i don't think it even exists yet (at least within #neocities), but i would *love* to be a part of a #SEAsian #webring...
