A #botanist searches for the #seeds of the rare #DeathValleySage

April 2, 2026

"For more than 15 years, botanist Naomi Fraga of the #CaliforniaBotanicGarden has been trying to collect seeds from the rare Death Valley sage, for safekeeping in a vault of native California seeds. Each time, she's come home empty handed. But this year, with the desert in the midst of a big bloom, she's trying again.

" 'It's a little bit of a gamble,' she says. 'But, you know, the plant's having a really good year. I feel hopeful.' "

Jennifer Ebeling, of the podcast ‘The Daily Gardener: A Podcast about Botanical History and Literature’ creates OTD posts about botanists, and in this case a widow, of interest. Far from OTD, may I still salute Martha Daniel Logan and her #rareseeds. #widowedwriter #seedexchange

After her #Husband died, Martha provided #Rare #Seeds & #Plants to the top #Botanists of her time & set up a #Seed exchange between the American #Colonies & #Britain. She also wrote a #Gardening advice column & her #Gardener's #Calendar graced the back of #Almanacs for decades. In 1761, John #Bartram wrote that Martha was, “an elderly #Widow #Lady who spares no pains or cost to oblige me. Her #Garden is her #Delight."

A reminder that Baker Creek / Rareseeds are a bunch of right wing nutjobs. And this post will explain why.

First, second, and third, they just regularly utilize racist tropes and stereotypes to sell seeds.

Nextly, at their yearly "buy our seeds" festival in 2019 they were going to invite Cliven Bundy as a guest speaker.

If that name sounds familiar, he is a fascist right wing crazy who got into an armed standoff with the federal government for illegally grazing his cattle on public land, claimed his family has rights to the land and bulldozed an indigenous Paiute site and wildlife sanctuary.

It was only after this completely blew up on social media that they took him off their guest speaker list.

If you're looking for a reputable seed supplier, look elsewhere.
