I suppose the pro/con of being a gay business academic currently studying LGBTQ owned businesses is that my work keeps becoming more and more relevant to the concerns of business owners, but I also am becoming less and less valuable to PhD programs.

One time my partner said that if I went corporate, rather than becoming a public business researcher, and got the money that went along with a big city job, then he would probably go with me. However, I need to explain to him, now that my life has shifted, that I would be happy being an adjunct at a business program near my hometown (western Maryland) and work more on my antiquing business. Which would not likely fit into his current big city gay lifestyle.

My area of historical expertise is very specific - early 19th century to early 20th century economic development of maritime areas of the Florida Gulf Coast. Which, if you hadn’t caught on already, means that I am absolutely unbearable as a person most of the time.
One of the fun little things I had to do recently was submit a list of objectives for my research. Which in this context meant telling my department what could be the possible industry applications could be for all of this work.

Going to another queer resiliency book club meeting today. Which, in the past, has more or less just been a bunch of queer, disabled academics sitting in a room to talk about how much we don’t like being queer disabled academics living in the state of Florida.
