Christmas day walk yesterday. This is what I term a "grudge footpath". Legally, it's a public right of way. So it has to be passable. But sometimes the landowners really, really want you to know that they would really, really prefer you to go elsewhere. In this case, the two fences are approximately 70cm apart for most of the length, and at some points closer. Seen quite a few of these, especially at the point where semi-urban footpaths join into rural ones. Apparently the law about minimum widths only applies when the footpath runs through cropland?

_The Evening Post_, 20 November 1924:
RIGHT-OF-WAY WANTED
For some time past, residents of #Ngaio have taken advantage of a short cut across vacant land to #Wadestown, and so to the city by tram, but notice has now been given by the owners of the land that the practice must be discontinued. Representations have accordingly been made to the City Council by those concerned that such a means of access is of very considerable convenience, and value to residents of Ngaio, and they are therefore asking that the council should consider the provision of a public way
