“Using machine learning to better include genetic variation when analyzing proteins.”
That’s what they asked for, to celebrate a doctoral thesis. This was a fun challenge.
I included an amino acid and one nasty bug at no extra cost. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Every amino acid shares a nearly identical chemical backbone. Bonded to a central alpha-carbon, it features: and Amino Group NH2, Carboxyl Group COOH, Hydrogen Atom H, Side Chain R-Group (i.e., Star-Group): This Star-Group dictates the specific properties, electrical charge, and shape of the amino acid. The star can be any number of different atoms. Linked together, they build the enzymes, muscles, tissues, and hormones your body needs to function. While over 500 amino acids exist in nature, humans rely on 20 specific amino acids, but if you’re not careful, you might get a cat.
