City of Houston faces lawsuit over continued membership in H-GAC despite Prop B

A voter-approved charter amendment called Proposition B, which won a landslide victory with 65% support in 2023, required the city to renegotiate its representation or withdraw from the Houston-Galveston Area Council. Neither of those things has happened.

We've published a Deep Dive into Proposition B on this month's ballot: https://indivisiblesf.org/blog/2024/1/30/deep-dive-on-the-sfpd-mandatory-staffing-minimum

This measure, centered around a five-year schedule of police staffing minimums, wouldn't kick in until, someday, the City passes some as-yet-unseen tax measure.

The City could hire more cops today if only it had the money. (Whether that's a good use of that money is another question.) But we don't, and #PropB would not fix that.

Deep dive on Proposition B (February 2024) | Indivisible SF

How many sworn officers should SFPD have? Currently, the Board decides, but the City doesn’t have the money to hire more. A proposition in February 2024 would change the process—but there are some wrinkles.

Houston voters, by approving Prop B, said they wanted the city to have more proportional representation on the Houston-Galveston Area Council and its Transportation Policy Council. But that may not happen.

Houston-area transportation council rejects proposal to give city more proportional representation

Prop B, passed by Houston voters in November, compels the city to leave a regional council of governments and metropolitan planning organization if it cannot negotiate for more proportional representation based on its population.

Hey Denton, Texas people- you may want to check out Decriminalize Denton's birdsite and/or Facebook accounts for some interesting info about Chief Shoemaker and Prop B.

The rumors that he is spreading misinformation about Prop B and encouraging cops to attend the June 6th City Council meeting in plainclothes to protest it are apparently true. An anonymous whistleblower has dropped some receipts.

SHOW UP AND VOTE, Austin, TX!

From the Austin Chronicle, regarding May elections for Props A & B:

City of Austin Prop A: FOR.
It's time for Austin to enter a new era of civilian oversight of the Austin Police Department, which we feel Prop A can achieve...

City of Austin Prop B: AGAINST.
On the merits of each ordinance alone, we'd be in favor of Prop A and against Prop B. But the deceptive, underhanded tactics deployed by the Austin Police Association to get Prop B on the ballot just cements the case against their ordinance...
