Summary: The article reports on a study showing that repetitive thinking about a topic can prime involuntary memories related to that topic, a phenomenon called preoccupation priming. Through a controlled experiment, researchers demonstrated a causal link between sustained thought about food and increased food-related involuntary memories, as well as a rise in total involuntary memories. The findings suggest daily thinking habits can shape which memories surface spontaneously.

This article is of interest to psychology enthusiasts because it provides experimental evidence for how cognitive processes like rumination influence memory retrieval, highlighting the interaction between attention, memory systems, and daily mental life.

A quotation from George Bernard Shaw

The secret of being miserable is to have leisure to bother about whether you are happy or not. The cure for it is occupation, because occupation means pre-occupation; and the pre-occupied person is neither happy nor unhappy, but simply alive and active, which is pleasanter than any happiness until you are tired of it.

A quotation from Dannie Abse

That Greek one then is my hero, who watched the bath water
rise above his navel and rushed out naked. “I found it,
I found it” into the street in all his shining, and forgot
that others would only stare at his genitals. What laughter!
