@jhooper That is incredibly frustrating, but I'm happy to hear that you got it working.

The formatting on some of these older devices is very particular.

A few weeks ago I was upgrading the ROM on my #PocketPC. I fiddled with it all day long and could not get it to read the files from the SD card.

When the system was running normally it could read the SD card but when I was attempting to upgrade through the boot loader it would see nothing.

I wasn't sure if the files were bad or if it was the SD card or if it was the formatting, so I tried everything.

Multiple different versions of the upgrade files, different SD cards, I formatted in Fat 32 with various programs and nothing.

Finally there was a tip in a really old forum that I found where someone said they had to format it in Windows XP.

I pulled out an old Windows XP laptop and formatted the card in Fat32 with the basic Windows formatting tool and the upgrade worked immediately!

So strange...

Yesterday I posted here https://mas.to/@Judeau/116766638552246794 about being unable to source an old driver for a #PocketPC #Belkin #keyboard and I got to witness something quite special.

I had searched everywhere I could think of for the driver. Archive, Wayback, multiple old forums and PPC archives, even some Russian PPC sites and came up empty handed. There were no scans of the driver disc and none on Ebay to purchase.

Through the simple act of people "Boosting" my post, it found it's way to @samedwards who was able to source the driver tucked away on an obscure Asian website here https://d.richie-aa.top:5212/%E7%B3%BB%E7%BB%9F%E8%B5%84%E6%BA%90/Windows%20Mobile/%E9%A9%B1%E5%8A%A8/Keyboard%20Drivers/Belkin%20snap%20n%20type%20wm%202003

Thank you all so much! Mastodon is one incredible community!!!

New UPDATED Post: https://mas.to/@Judeau/116771368986836217

SOLVED: [email protected] was somehow able to locate this driver! Thank you everyone and I will make a new post in the morning detailing everything and giving proper credit.

The other day I purchased a #Belkin #Keyboard for my PPC.

The model number is F8D0502 and it goes by two different names: SnapNType and Thumb Keyboard.

I have looked everywhere for a driver. I can only locate the manual on Archive and I found the old Belkin driver page on the Wayback but the file was never preserved.

Does ANYONE have access to the driver or the installation CD?

I am specifically needing one for the Dell Axim x50/x51.

ANY help is appreciated.

Asus P525w
(2006)

A powerful Taiwanese pocket computer designed for professionals who refused to compromise between a traditional phone keypad and PDA capabilities. Running on Windows Mobile, it stood out as a direct competitor to Nokia's Communicators and Sony Ericsson's P-series.

Intel XScale PXA270 416 MHz processor, 64 MB RAM, 128 MB ROM, miniSD slot, 2.6-inch resistive TFT touchscreen, 240x320 resolution, 2 MP autofocus camera with flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, 1300 mAh battery, dimensions 116.8x59x19mm, weight 159 g.

The P525w featured a premium brushed aluminum front cover that gave it a highly professional look. Pre-loaded with updated firmware optimizing Wi-Fi connectivity and out-of-the-box VoIP integration for corporate networks. Its biggest strength was versatility: you could easily dial numbers with one hand on the physical keys while on the move, or pull out the stylus to edit spreadsheets in office apps.

2007. A $2,500 pocket PC. Now worth... $200. Still runs Resident Evil. 🧟🎮

Sony UX58. 4.5" touchscreen. Slide-out QWERTY. 484 grams. Intel single-core. Windows Vista (ugh). Upgrade to XP or Win7 to survive.

Hardcore modders swapped in dual-core CPUs, extra fans, bigger SSDs.

Then—Resident Evil 2 remastered. On your palm.

Not e-waste. Digital treasure.

Another thing that really surprises me is that the #GPS stuff is driverless on #PocketPC.

I don't really understand why. Cameras, LAN adapters, non BT Keyboards, etc. all require drivers, but not the GPS stuff.

GPS uses the #NMEA standard but i find it hard to believe that support for this was baked into #WinCE.

Whatever the reason its quite convenient!

Also Garmin & Tomtom have navigational software that works on #PocketPC.

Unfortunately I am still trying to figure out how to configure these. Especially with newer maps which I have downloaded but can't figure out where to put them in the programs file structure & get them to integrate properly.

There is a lot of older software that Is easy enough to find, installs & works great though.

Pharos had the OSTIA software & Microsoft had Streets and Trips.

Recently I have been toying around with a lot of the old #PocketPC #GPS stuff.

There are a variety of different ways to connect to a GPS. Some connect via the Compact Flash slot, some are SDIO, some Bluetooth and others through a physical serial cable.

You also have to decide on what GPS software that you want to use and then find compatible maps.

I'm still figuring things out and it is quite finicky but when it works it is surprisingly decent!

@finisek Yeah. It's such a strange decision. I have no idea why they would restrict it from being accessed on a PC while seemingly EVERYTHING else is easily accessible.

It was a wakeup call for me though.

I will be finding a different app to use and will certainly be making heavier use of the voice recorder on my #PocketPC

Thanks again!

After upgrading my #Android phone a while back, I decided to take the old phone (Pixel 6) and backup all my photos, videos etc.

As I am copying them to my computer I was having a hard time finding where the voice recordings were located.

I take a LOT of voice recordings & haven't backed them up in years.

After doing a bit of reading it sounds like #Google sealed them off and you have to have root access unless you share them online.

WTF?!

#PocketPC would never do this to me.
