We finally got around to watching, Pike River. It has a very strong female cast with Melanie Lynskey and Robyn Marshall (superb as always) as the leads, Lucy Lawless as Helen Kelly (😢), and even Jacinda Ardern makes a cameo in her role as leader of the Opposition! Lots of moody West Coast land- and sea-scapes. The film burns with a sense of injustice but also and the power of persistence and solidarity. A bit slow at times and the pacing didn't seem quite right at times, making the film seem longer than intended. Still, an essential film in the canon of Aotearoa filmography. Four out of five stars from me.

Pike River | Film | NZ On Screen
Pike River - In the aftermath of an explosion that rocked the Pike River Mine and took the lives of 29 West Coasters, two women step up to fight for accountability. Based on true events, Rob Sarkies' movie follows Anna Osborne (Melanie Lynskey, from Heavenly Creatures) and Sonya Rockhouse (Outrageous Fortune's Robyn Malcolm), who have each lost a loved one in the disaster. As official responses slow and accountability begins to look elusive, the pair take their cause to the courts and the nation. Director Rob Sarkies (Out of the Blue) and writer Fiona Samuels (Consent) worked closely with families of the Pike River miners.
