#BlackfeetNation to host first-ever Murdered and Missing
#IndigenousWomen tribunal in the U.S.

#MMIW tribunal to be held at the Blackfeet Community College in Browning, Montana the weekend of October 4-5 [2019]

"'This is not just a Blackfeet or #Montana tribes’ tragedy, it is an #IndianCountry tragedy, and a national and international disgrace. This is a multi-generational epidemic the federal government has done nothing to address – even less than the #CanadianGovernment – which was found to be complicit in ‘deliberate race, identity and gender-based genocide’ by its own National Inquiry into MMIW,' said Chairman Tim Davis of the Blackfeet Nation. "

"'The Blackfeet Nation is uniquely positioned to host this first of its kind MMIW tribunal in the lower-48 states. The Blackfeet Tribe (Amskapi Pikuni), a member of the Blackfoot Confederacy along with its three sister tribes – the #Piikani, #Blood and #Siksika, located in #AlbertaCanada, stands in solidarity in combatting the issue of MMIW (MMIP) in Indian country. “The truth is that we live in a country whose laws and institutions perpetuate violations of basic human and Indigenous rights. These violations amount to nothing less than the deliberate, often covert campaign of genocide against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people,' wrote Chief Commissioner Marion Buller in Reclaiming Power and Place, the final report of Canada’s National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls published on June 3, 2019.

“'We are not divided by the border we are united in our grief. Many women and children stolen from our communities are trafficked back and forth between the US and Canada,' explained Chairman Davis.
Tribal members constitute seven percent of Montana’s population, but the state identifies some 26 percent of missing persons as Native American. Available evidence suggests that may be a low estimate. Last year’s Urban Indian Health Institute Report identified Montana as the state with the fifth highest incidence of MMIW cases. Billings, which had the same disturbing ranking among cities, is a known-hub on the I-90 corridor through #CrowNation, #Cheyenne and #LakotaDakota country to Minnesota, along which indigenous women and children are trafficked into sex slavery. The western 'track' runs from Missoula to Seattle, Washington. As of spring 2019, Montana had not submitted any MMIW data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 'For those abducted into sex-slavery, the I-90 corridor is a second #HighwayOfTears, said Chairman Davis, drawing a comparison to the infamous highway in #BritishColumbia cited in #ReclaimingPowerAndPlace."

Carseland local Mirabel Goodstriker crowned Miss Junior Blackfoot Canada

11-year-old Mirabel Goodstriker from Carseland was recently crowned Miss Junior Blackfoot Canada, which is a competition between the three Blackfoot Nations of Kainai, Blackfoot and Piikani. As an ambassador for the nations, Goodstriker said it's really exciting to have the crown, and she enjoys the responsibilities that come with her role like giving speeches. It took a lot of work to earn such a well-respected role, as she said she had to write an essay and give several speeches about the Blackfoot people and history, as well as dance powwow. Goodstriker said she's been to many events since winning the crown, like the Calgary Flames' first ever Indigenous celebration game, Stampeders' games, and more. While being in front of that many people may seem intimidating to some, Goodstriker is proud to represent Blackfoot culture and gratefully accepts the responsibilities that come with being an ambassador for all Blackfoot nations. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/str-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1634917815632-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1634917815632]) s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); Goodstriker's passion and dedication doesn't come as a surprise, as she comes from a family that lives and breathes powwow. Her late mother was Miss Siksika in 1995 and then she went on to become the Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess in 1996. Her late father, Jason Goodstriker was a world-renowned powwow announcer. Goodstriker’s grandmother Vicki Yellow Old Woman says that she got her love of being a princess from her mother and the love of powwow from her father. “She has got a bit of history there and she just loves to dance. She has been dancing since she was basically a newborn. She was out in the arena with her mom.” googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/str-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1634917815632-bbm2'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1634917815632]) s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); Yellow Old Woman says that she started out as a traditional dancer and even won competitions at just two years old. Her love of dance continues to this day, as Goodstriker practices 6-10 songs every day, which is a lot of work but she loves it. "We are so proud of her, we are proud of her accomplishment, and she is a sweet little girl we are proud of who she has become in her own right.” Goodstriker's pride and passion for Blackfoot culture doesn't stop there though, as Yellow Old Woman explained she also earned an honorable mention for the 2022 Honouring Spirit Indigenous Student Award. She started the first club celebrating Indigenous culture in Carseland, where she taught her friends and other classmates about Blackfoot culture and how to dance powwow. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/str-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1634917815632-bbm3'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1634917815632]) s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); As for what Goodstriker's future hold, she said she wants to continue running for princess roles, stating she won't need to get a job as she'll just be a full-time princess instead. As for the immediate future, Goodstriker will be at the Lead by Example Powwow hosted in Strathmore. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/str-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1634917815632-bbm4'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1634917815632]) s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); Send your news tips, story ideas, pictures, and videos to [email protected]
