BROWNING — "#FASTBlackfeet hosted a Community Food Sovereignty event starting with a bison harvest in the morning and a lodge set-up in the afternoon where people gathered to attend workshops about #FoodPreparation.

"Blackfeet Tribal Council Member Mike Comes At Night brought in a load of produce from the Yakama Nation in Washington State for the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. 'We made it home safely from the Yakama Nation with a generous load of produce for the Blackfeet People. I am honored, as a Councilman, to serve our people. I’ve traveled hundreds of miles to help
bring food home, and at the end of the day, I know I am doing my job. I also want to thank all the farmers who helped us with this food — may the Creator bless them and their families," Comes at

"#FortPeck's #Assiniboine and #Sioux Tribes are distributing buffalo meat, and gathering groceries, after declaring a state of emergency in Montana.
"In California, the #Yurok Tribal Council approved $300 food assistance cards for Yurok because of the disruptions in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program #SNAP, and #CalFresh benefits, due to the federal government shutdown.
'Our goal is to help our most vulnerable citizens get through this challenging time,' said Yurok Chairman Joseph L. James, who said the tribe is working to mitigate the hardships on families from
the federal shutdown.
"In #Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the #CherokeeNation announced a $6.5 million response package. This includes cash payments of up to $185 per individual Cherokee Nation citizens on SNAP. It also includes over $1.25 million to support food banks and other non-profit food programs.
"The Cherokee Nation's expanded emergency declaration includes tribal members who are currently on SNAP living anywhere in the United States. The Cherokee Nation has over 470,000 citizens living in all fifty states. Cherokee Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. said the Cherokee's network of 27 “at-large” organizations located in urban areas could access grants of $5,000 to address local food shortages.
"The #GilaRiverIndianCommunity, south of #Phoenix in #Arizona, is distributing $1,000 hardship payments to all adult tribal members, regardless of whether or not they are SNAP recipients.
"Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis said, 'We want to make sure that, as a sovereign nation, we take care of our members during this unprecedented shutdown.'
" 'I hope that this payment brings some peace of mind during this time of uncertainty at the federal
level.' "

organizing #MutualAid, to feed the people in a region of great need.
"The Blackfeet Tribal Business Council said it has authorized the culling of 18 buffalo from the Blackfeet Nation herd. 'The processed meat will be distributed directly to community members to help
sustain food access during this period of uncertainty.'
"In Rapid City, mutual aid will soon be underway, with a planning session on Oct. 29. '#SNAP looks like it will not be issued in November. Let’s get organized,' said #WotakuyeMutualAidSociety (Meals for Relatives Rapid City COVID Response).
"The Blackfeet Nation said, 'This proactive measure is part of a broader effort by the Council to safeguard essential food distribution programs, particularly as the future of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) remains uncertain.'
" 'While Governor Greg Gianforte’s Office continues working to ensure SNAP benefits remain available to all Montanans, including those in Blackfeet Country, the Council’s decision reflects a commitment to meeting community needs.'
"The Blackfeet Fish and Wildlife Department and the Blackfeet Commodity Office are coordinating an elk harvest to further supplement food distribution efforts. Processed elk meat will also be made available to community members in the coming weeks.
"'With federal restrictions and the shutdown disrupting vital resources, the Blackfeet Nation is turning to its own natural resources and community partnerships to ensure that families continue to have access to food,' the Blackfeet Nation said."

"'This is not just a Blackfeet or #Montana tribes’ tragedy, it is an #IndianCountry tragedy, and a national and international disgrace. This is a multi-generational epidemic the federal government has done nothing to address – even less than the #CanadianGovernment – which was found to be complicit in ‘deliberate race, identity and gender-based genocide’ by its own National Inquiry into MMIW,' said Chairman Tim Davis of the Blackfeet Nation. "
"'The Blackfeet Nation is uniquely positioned to host this first of its kind MMIW tribunal in the lower-48 states. The Blackfeet Tribe (Amskapi Pikuni), a member of the Blackfoot Confederacy along with its three sister tribes – the #Piikani, #Blood and #Siksika, located in #AlbertaCanada, stands in solidarity in combatting the issue of MMIW (MMIP) in Indian country. “The truth is that we live in a country whose laws and institutions perpetuate violations of basic human and Indigenous rights. These violations amount to nothing less than the deliberate, often covert campaign of genocide against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people,' wrote Chief Commissioner Marion Buller in Reclaiming Power and Place, the final report of Canada’s National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls published on June 3, 2019.
“'We are not divided by the border we are united in our grief. Many women and children stolen from our communities are trafficked back and forth between the US and Canada,' explained Chairman Davis.
Tribal members constitute seven percent of Montana’s population, but the state identifies some 26 percent of missing persons as Native American. Available evidence suggests that may be a low estimate. Last year’s Urban Indian Health Institute Report identified Montana as the state with the fifth highest incidence of MMIW cases. Billings, which had the same disturbing ranking among cities, is a known-hub on the I-90 corridor through #CrowNation, #Cheyenne and #LakotaDakota country to Minnesota, along which indigenous women and children are trafficked into sex slavery. The western 'track' runs from Missoula to Seattle, Washington. As of spring 2019, Montana had not submitted any MMIW data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 'For those abducted into sex-slavery, the I-90 corridor is a second #HighwayOfTears, said Chairman Davis, drawing a comparison to the infamous highway in #BritishColumbia cited in #ReclaimingPowerAndPlace."
