There’s Always a Song & a Prayer

So, there’s this show that I unexpectedly love. When I watched the first few minutes a few years back, I thought, this isn’t really me, I don’t think I can get into it. The Way Home is on Hallmark. It is about three generations of women, it is about family, it is about the choices that we make and about the choices those who have gone before us have made. The time travel part was weird to me. But you know what got me? The music. Because the time period of that first season was the 90’s. I heard Sister Hazel, Britney Spears, and so many more artists and songs that marked my high school years. The music reeled me in and I got on board with the time travel. A few episodes ago, one of the male characters sang Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper. He slowed it down. It was the same but it was different. It was beautiful and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. I went on YouTube yesterday to see if I could find it but instead I found P!nk doing an acoustic version of Time After Time. It is beautiful, thoughtful, breathtaking, nostalgic and I love it so I am sharing it here.

There is improbability in the air,The sky seems unsure to pour.Faith is not a fear of drought,But a soul reaching for rain. I see my prayers land slowly,In some apocryphal tome,Forsaken by a reader's gaze,Pulsing with uncertainty. Somewhere on a screen up high,A notification ping,Ignored by heavenly hosts,Serving the canonical. Though I wallow in my sins,Taunted by my own desires,There comes a solemn momentWhen I dream of some heaven. A fragile thought appears,A prayer, a wish, a gasp.I […]

Opening prayers for Proper 7 Year A (June 21 2026)

NEW: read ‘Reflecting on my Lectionary Prayers‘- an introduction the Lectionary Prayers resource.

Part of a series of opening prayers for Sundays in the Revised Common Lectionary. They take their inspiration from the Scripture readings in the Lectionary. Worship leaders are welcome to use them for worship, but if you print or display any part of them, please credit the author. Comments welcome. These prayers are based on the readings for Proper 7 Year A: Genesis 21:8-21; Psalm 86:1-10, 16-17; Romans 6:1b-11; Matthew 10:24-39.

Call to Prayer

Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer.

Psalm 81.1

Let us pray.

Prayer of Approach

There is no god like you, O God.
For you are great;
you do wonderful things
and you are worthy of praise from the entire world.
For you alone are God-
mighty and mysterious, the holy Creator
and we worship you.

You care for the poor and needy.
The outcast and all who are in trouble
turn you with their cries for help,
and you listen to them.
You care for each person
and for all your creation.
And so we can call on you for comfort and help.

Prayer of Confession

Holy and eternal God,
we confess that we are hardly worthy
of your care for us.
We are ungrateful and selfish.
We forget too easily
that Christ calls us to discipleship.
We want our Christianity to be easy
and we ignore Christ’s warnings that it cannot always be so.

Forgive our lack of effort for Christ’s cause
and our lack of faith.

Absolution and Supplication

We thank you, God
that through faith in your Son, Jesus Christ
we need no longer be slaves of sin.
In our baptism, we have shared in his death and resurrection
dying to our sin, and given new life.
By your Spirit,
may we truly be people who are alive in Christ,
fearlessly proclaiming his gospel of love and peace
and knowing your strength for the times
when we face opposition or ridicule
for being followers of Jesus.

We pray all this in his name, Amen.
