Sumac in Soft Descent
This photograph captures a branch of autumn-touched leaves—orange, green, and gently fading—likely winged sumac (Rhus copallinum). The leaves enter from the right, cascading into view with quiet elegance. Their colors glow against a dark, blurred background, making each leaflet appear suspended in soft ceremony, as if mid-transition between seasons.

Mockingbird in the White Silence
A couple of mornings ago, Charlie and I were out walking when I spotted a bird perched quietly overhead. It was early—shade blanketed everything—so what I saw was mostly silhouette and suggestion. This morning, I lightened the image and noticed a surprising blue coronation. I paused, thinking: That’s not a blue jay. Besides, blue jays don’t usually linger on power lines.
Turns out it’s a Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), though its plumage is bluer than I’m used to seeing. I like the image—it’s soft, almost ethereal, yet holds remarkable detail.

Is it just me, or did the sun get a little greener when Juli stepped out in that outfit?

How Nature Works
I believe this butterfly is a Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia), weaving its way among a patch of Skyblue Asters (Symphyotrichum oolentangiense). The movement feels ceremonial—each perch a brief alliance between wing and petal.
I watched a series a while back that you might find interesting: Life on Our Planet, narrated by Morgan Freeman. Over eight hours, it attempts to chronicle the story of life on Earth—from its primordial beginnings to the present day. Naturally, it doesn’t dive too deep into any one chapter, but it does touch on evolution, the impact of humanity, and the fragile continuation of life. It’s a sweeping overview, more mythic ledger than exhaustive archive.

Fleet of Feathered Knaves
A couple of days ago, I mentioned the ragtag crew of ducks and geese patrolling the lake we visited. This image captures a contingent of that group—perhaps half of the full assembly. There was also a sizable flock of black-bellied whistling ducks at the lake, but this domestic crew kept to themselves, forming a smaller, tight-knit clique. No mingling, no negotiations—just quiet sovereignty in their own corner of the water.
