Salt Crystals

A salt encrusted leaf on the dried bed of Kedron Brook Wetlands

The leaf was on the bed of a dried up lake bed, above the high tide line, in tidal wetlands. It was a dry end to summer, and the lake water in the wetlands had retreated, leaving a large section of the salty muddy lakebed to dry out in the sun, covered with organic material.

As it lay in the sun, the leaf dehydrated, expelling salty water through its pores. Each tiny pore gradually growing long thin crystals of hair, as new salty water came through the pore and evaporated. The leaf likely continued to pull even more salty water from the mud below it as it happened, letting the crystals grow even longer than they otherwise might have.

The crystals themselves are likely made of Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) rather than regular table salt, as the hair like structure is typical of this type of salt.
