On #ThisDayInHistory in 1302, in the midst of tax disputes with French king #PhilipTheFair and English king #EdwardLongshanks, Pope #BonifaceVIII issued papal bull #UnamSanctam. It argued for submission of all earthly power to the Pope and Church as the only path to salvation.

Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Order, was burned alive in 1314.
Before the flames took him, he allegedly cursed both the king and the pope.
Within a year, both were dead.
Cue the legend: the Templar Curse was born.
