Paychecks, up to €850 bonuses arriving: here's who will receive them.

Heavier paychecks, with benefits that can reach €850 per year. These are the results of the simulation conducted by the Foundation for the Studies of Labor Consultants to assess the real benefits of applying the substitute tax of 5% on increases linked to contract renewals.

The three renewals analyzed are those of contracts in the retail, telecommunications, and metalworking sectors. The pay stub relief is linked to increases resulting from the three-year renewals: this year, the increase will be taxed with a substitute tax of 5% for income up to €33,000. What results is an increase ranging from €188 to €851 per year.

Paycheck, how much does it increase with the new tax on contract renewals

The biggest advantage, among the three renewed contracts, is for employees in the retail sector. For them, the maximum saving can reach €851 for Level II, with a ral (relative value adjustment) of €31,400. This thanks to the increases of €2,698 provided by the 2024 renewal. And this sum is subject to the flat tax of 5% instead of Irpef (Italian income tax), resulting in a benefit on the paycheck.

For the TLC (telecommunications) sector, instead, the advantage can exceed €500. The contract renewal, which took place at the end of 2025, can lead to a maximum saving on Level 6, with a tal (monthly salary) of €30,248: the increase in this case is €1,709, to which the new tax is applied. For metalworkers, instead, the savings for a Level B1 (ral of €30,529) is €250 in the face of an increase of €842, while for a Level D1 (ral of €22,989) with an increase of €634, the final benefit on the paycheck is €188.

Another calculation is made by the foundation on the 15% tax for night work, holidays, and weekly rest. Considering a sum of €1,500, i.e. the maximum that can be applied to the flat tax, the benefit can range from just under €80 (for those with an annual gross income of €12,000) to a maximum of €690 (for annual gross incomes of €40,000).

Workers at one of Ohio’s largest library systems set to unionize

Employees seek better health care benefits and pay amid an increased demand for library services

Workers from one of the biggest library systems in Ohio are establishing a labor union focused on improvements they say need to happen in areas such as wages and paid time off.

Employees with the Columbus Metropolitan Library have been working to form a union for the better part of a year, according to members participating in the effort, and planning to unionize with the Ohio Federation of Teachers.

For Jude Virostko, an adult services librarian at the library system’s South High branch, growing up in Coshocton meant being a “library kid,” something that fed into her thirst for knowledge and desire to be a librarian.

“I was at my library every chance I got,” Virostko said. “It was a place where I felt safe when that wasn’t necessarily the case in other places.”

She “wanted to be that safe space” after she moved to Columbus and has been in libraries every since.

“Libraries are an essential part of a functioning democracy,” Virostko said, as they face funding challenges on the state and federal level.

But being a librarian has “become a little bit more dangerous,” according to Megan Sheeran, a librarian at the Columbus library’s main location in downtown Columbus.

She has watched as the library has become a place for all people to come and feel welcomed, but also a place where staff are asked to do more than ever before.

“Some have been threatened and assaulted,” Sheehan said. “People are honestly having a really tough time and we’re on the frontlines being asked to help with that.”

About 630 workers are a part of the union’s bargaining unit, and the organizing committee has talked with more than half of union-eligible Columbus Metropolitan Library employees, with about 80% supportive of the efforts.
