Medicines, privatization, and business. Why another medicine is needed
Our Constitution recognizes the protection of health as a universal right and guarantees care to the indigent. But today, the ability to get treatment increasingly depends on the size of an individual’s wallet. Daily, we hear reports of long waiting lists and citizens who forgo treatment, but rarely do we go beyond the headlines, searching for the causes and responsibilities behind this situation.
Healthcare, from cure to assistance and medications, is today one of the world’s largest markets, involving major industrial groups and financial funds. A small group of pharmaceutical companies, Big Pharma, has the monopoly, in the West, on the production of medicines; TRIPs agreements on patents prevent millions of people from accessing care. The attempt to build a public pharmaceutical company of European size was immediately opposed. Prevention is reduced to the bare minimum.
In Italy, the weight of private healthcare is constantly growing; but public and private healthcare have opposing goals, the first grows on health, the second on illness.
The book, intertwining the local and global dimensions, addresses several planes: from the consequences of the dismantling of the NHS and the penetration of the private sector into public health to possible forms of activism and the strategies necessary to regain the right to health.

Is the center-left like the center-right? Everything … happens in Thiene. A curious scandal broke out in recent hours in Thiene, the Vicenza town that leans gently towards the Val D’Astico. The center-left municipal administration of the city, governed by Mayor “Giampi” Michelusi, hastily withdrew its sponsorship of the theatrical production “La sciagura” (The Misfortune), by and with Andrea Scanzi (produced by Loft), which will be held at the Teatro Comunale on May 29th, on Friday, May 22nd. The mayor reversed course after the furious criticism of a town councilor from Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), Giulia Scanavin. “A municipality cannot grant its sponsorship to a communication openly aligned against the national executive,” explained the Melon supporter from the minority in the municipality. According to the local newspaper Altovicentinonline.it, the first to report the news, it was “the offensiveness” of the show’s titles and tone, signed by the journalist from Il Fatto Quotidiano, that angered Scanavin. “A municipal administration can host cultural events, even critical, satirical, or politically oriented (and thankfully so ndr), but sponsoring is another thing: it means granting public and institutional recognition. It’s a very serious matter. The municipality cannot become a tool for partisan propaganda against the Government chosen democratically by Italians.”

Even though “La sciagura” is a theatrical production that has been on tour since 2024, and was previously a published book by PaperFirst, Mayor Michelusi quickly explained what was offensive about the title while officially documenting the revocation of sponsorship, thereby agreeing with the Fratelli d’Italia councilor. “In the request submitted for a series of performances, the title in question was different, specifically it did not include the subtitle and it was not possible to presume its content.” In short, the subtitle added by the “La sciagura” production team, which became the subject of a storm, was: “Chronicle of a Government of Runaways.” Michelusi also pointed out that the draft poster had not been submitted to the municipal offices to obtain permission. “The mayor called me on Friday evening to tell me about the revocation. The posters had not yet been posted, so yesterday I erased the subtitle on the posters one by one with a black marker,” explains to FattoQuotidiano.it, the show’s organizer, Alberto Parisotto.

The withdrawal of sponsorship means a 50% reduction in the costs of poster placement. “Nothing more. The organization is autonomous and manages on its own, but it’s the Scanavin controversy that is preposterous,” Parisotto remarks. “But where is the offense? There is no defamation. From a satirical point of view, the controversy is insane,” recalls Scanzi himself. “Does the mayor really discover the content of “La sciagura” just a few days before? Is there still someone who doesn’t know that my text criticizes the Meloni government? I find the mayor’s attitude very symptomatic, to the point that on May 29th next, being also the last performance of a work on tour for three seasons, I will dedicate a passage to him at the beginning of the show.”

Più di 3,5 miliardi l’anno dallo Stato fra moneta sonante e vantaggi vari (fiscali e non solo) per Cgil, Cisl, Uil (e anche le sigle minori come l’Ugl). Denaro pubblico per pensioni d’oro, Caf, patronati, Onlus, corsi, formazione professionale, stipendi e contributi per migliaia di distaccati dal lavoro. Le sigle sindacali inoltre gestiscono i fondi pensione, sono collegate con banche, holding, cooperative, comitati d’affari, strutture sanitarie convenzionate, però non devono neanche presentare un bilancio. Ma non è tutto. Perché un’apposita norma consente agli esponenti dei sindacati laute pensioni a carico dello Stato senza il versamento dei contributi? Perché un dirigente neo-assunto nel settore privato, subito collocato in aspettativa non retribuita (apparentemente a “totale carico del sindacato”), può guadagnarsi una pensione di anche settemila euro mensili? Perché una legge truffa sulla rappresentanza concede a questi sindacati un regime di monopolio, mentre agli altri viene negato persino il diritto di assemblea? La lista dei benefici per la casta sindacale è lunga e incredibile. In questo libro viene per la prima volta squadernata una realtà che, così come organizzata, nel difficile mondo del lavoro odierno, non ha davvero senso. Un volume che scoperchia tutto ciò che non funziona e propone un modello differente per riformare l’intero settore.

The unions also manage pension funds, are connected with banks, holding companies, cooperatives, business committees, affiliated healthcare facilities, but don’t even have to present a balance sheet. But that’s not all. Why does a specific law allow union executives generous pensions paid for by the State without contributions being made? Why can a newly hired manager in the private sector, immediately placed on unpaid leave (apparently “at the full expense of the union”), earn a monthly pension of even seven thousand euros? Why does a fraud law on representation grant these unions a monopoly regime, while the others are even denied the right of assembly? The list of benefits for the union caste is long and incredible. In this book, for the first time, this reality, as it is organized, in today’s difficult world of work, really makes no sense. A volume that exposes everything that doesn’t work and proposes a different model for reforming the entire sector.

Possiamo essere molto intelligenti da soli ma la bellezza della condivisione ci arricchisce e permette ai nostri pensieri di diventare molto più potenti”. A dirlo è la direttrice della scuola di cittadinanza “Domenico De Masi” de il Fatto quotidiano, Miriam Mirolla che al salone del libro di Torino ha presentato il volume “Ai e potere” (ed. Paperfirst, a cura di Giulio Deangeli) che raccoglie le sedici lezioni del corso dedicato all’intelligenza artificiale. “La scuola di cittadinanza è il luogo in cui i più grandi studiosi e intellettuali si incontrano con cittadini qualunque che sono ancora disposti a studiare per migliorare le condizioni di vita”.
