I think the fact that traditionally Jews couldn't practice usury on other Jews, nor Christians on other Christians, but each were allowed to practice on the other, leads - in a body of people composed largely of one group - to the other group being the usurers. This seems to end badly. My key take home point is that human beings are dickheads, and we need to be very, very careful when we lend capital that the borrower has a clear plan for repayment, understands the financial cost, and has a clear plan regarding how they'll create sufficient funds for repayment, and how we'll insure against failure in that regard on very clear, simply written terms that everyone is happy with.
