This morning, #OpenCitations was awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Research Infrastructure Leadership, marking the conclusion of the Executive Masters in Management of Research Infrastructures (#EMMRI), a unique journey that saw members of the OpenCitations team participate in all the programme’s training modules.

We are deeply grateful to the entire faculty who guided us throughout this educational path, and especially to Dr Marialuisa Lavitrano, Dr Enrico Guarini, and Dr Laura Farina for making possible the creation of a master’s programme truly unique in its kind.

💡During today’s graduation session, one sentence resonated strongly with us: “Leadership is a form of enthusiasm.”

This perfectly reflects the spirit that drives our daily work at OpenCitations. Beyond the knowledge and skills we gained, we will carry forward the relationships and shared visions we built with colleagues across global research infrastructures: this enthusiasm for collaboratively building sustainable infrastructures for research is something we recognized in every participant we met along the way. @unimib @essepuntato @brevelunga

🔍 GRAPHIA Researchers Series

GRAPHIA’s Researchers Series continues, highlighting the people behind #GRAPHIA and the diverse expertise shaping the project. From digital humanities to data science, these perspectives come together to build more connected and accessible knowledge.

In this third feature, we introduce Marta Soricetti (#OpenCitations - University of Bologna), sharing her perspective on GRAPHIA’s work.

As she puts it:
“GRAPHIA automates the parsing of millions of documents through one unified citations network, revealing who is citing whom. It’s like, I would say, digital archaeology for modern scholarship.”

📢OpenCitations Governance Evolution

Over the past few years, #OpenCitations has grown into a core component of the global Open Science ecosystem. To match this growth, we have now adopted a new governance model, providing a clearer, more robust, and sustainable institutional foundation.

Developed with guidance from our International Advisory Board and in collaboration with the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, the new framework strengthens autonomy, formalizes long-term commitments, and aligns with internationally recognized best practices for Open Science sustainability.

This is a key milestone, reflecting the shared commitment of our community to ensure OpenCitations continues to operate in the service of researchers and institutions worldwide.

Efficient Bulk Access to Citations in OpenCitations

OpenCitations aggregates and deduplicates bibliographic information from CrossRef, Europe PubMed Central, and other sources to construct a comprehensive, open index of citations between scientific works. This post describes the opencitations-client package which wraps the OpenCitations API and implements an automated pipeline for locally downloading, caching, and accessing OpenCitations in bulk.

Biopragmatics

Looking back at 2025, #OpenCitations focused on strengthening the foundations: stronger workflows, resilient infrastructure, and deeper community collaboration.
