Barcelona Declaration Working Group Sustaining Infrastructures - Sessions on Open Research Infrastructures and Related Initiatives - Report

The Working Group Sustaining Infrastructures of the Barcelona Declaration examines how open infrastructures for research information can be sustainably supported across the research ecosystem. As part of this work, the Working Group is exploring different governance approaches, sustainability models, and forms of community engagement that underpin existing infrastructures. In September and October 2025, the Working Group organized two knowledge-sharing sessions with open infrastructures (Session 1) and initiatives operating at the ecosystem level (Session 2) to discuss sustainability models and how these can be strengthened through community engagement, coordination, transparency, and strategic investment. The sessions aimed at knowledge sharing and identifying where the Barcelona Declaration community (and the Working Group in particular), can most effectively contribute in supporting signatories as they transition toward open research information.Additional materialsSession on Open Infrastructures๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Presentations: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18187006๐ŸŽฌ Recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf_5px0PjzsSession on Related Initiatives๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Presentations: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18188254๐ŸŽฌ Recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf_5px0Pjzs

About the Working Groups The Barcelona Declaration working groups were established to promote collective action around the transition to open research information. The Barcelona Declaration calls upon organizations performing, funding and evaluating research to move towards open research information. In many areas, progress requires collaboration and collective work to overcome barriers. Such actions also often involve collaboration with organizations providing data, services and infrastructures. The working groups were established around priority areas identified in the Roadmap on Open Research Information, which outlines topics where coordinated efforts can accelerate progress.

๐ŸŒ #OpenDataDay is a global moment to reflect on the societal impact of open data, and how different parts of the open data ecosystem connect.

In that spirit, @okfn and Open Nederland highlight the importance of linking different open data communities: governmental, cultural, scientific, and geographical.

A few takeaways from the POSI 2.0 discussion:

๐Ÿ”น POSI can help guide governance and long-term strategy
๐Ÿ”น It supports sustainability decisions without prescribing a single model
๐Ÿ”น Europe PMCโ€™s open references added 256M+ citations, increasing coverage by 30%

From principles to practice: What POSI 2.0 means for sustainable open infrastructure

How do shared principles actually reshape governance, funding models, and everyday decisions inside open scholarly infrastructures? This question framed our recent webinar, organized in light of the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure (POSI) 2.0.
