I follow UK news a fair bit, but often a few days behind. I had already heard of the murder of Henry Nowak by Vickrum Digwa, and that it was in Southampton, but it only yesterday that I heard it mentioned that was in the St. Denys area of the city.

I know that part of the city fairly well, having been a student at Southampton University (campus: 15 minutes' walk away) for 3 years. Looking it up in more detail to remind myself ... yeah I've walked past that road many times, not least when Nicky & I used to go and stay with a friend who lived about 2 minutes away from there.

I'm sure that the vast majority of the good people of Southampton condemn the violence that has followed. It is as disappointing as it is unsurprising, that Nigel Farage does not.

Agi: Che cosa prevedono le linee guida "antirazzismo" della polizia britannica

AGI - Nel marzo 2025 il Consiglio nazionale dei capi di polizia (Npcc) britannico ha pubblicato un documento di "impegno antirazzista" che consigliava agli agenti di trattare i sospetti in modo diverso a seconda della loro etnia. Sono le linee guida antirazziste della polizia finite sotto accusa dopo la morte di un giovane bianco accoltellato da un sikh e in base alle quali gli agenti dovrebbero "rispondere a individui e comunità secondo i loro bisogni, circostanze ed esperienze specifiche, comprendendo che questi elementi saranno razzializzati e con l'obiettivo di ridurre il danno".
L'Npcc ha annunciato che rivedrà le linee guida antirazzismo, note come Piano d'azione contro il razzismo, che secondo alcuni sarebbero responsabili delle azioni degli agenti che hanno arrestato Nowak.
Non trattare tutti allo stesso modo
Questo non significa "trattare tutti allo stesso modo" o essere "ciechi al colore", recita il documento che chiede agli agenti di essere consapevoli del rischio che la polizia "criminalizzi le persone" e che i tassi di arresto e incriminazione dovrebbero essere resi uguali tra i diversi gruppi, anche se i livelli di criminalità sono differenti.

What do the British police's "anti-racism" guidelines predict?

The UK’s National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) published a “zero-tolerance to racism” document in March 2025, advising officers to treat suspects differently depending on their ethnicity. These anti-racism guidelines for the police came under fire after the death of a young white man stabbed by a Sikh, and according to which officers should “respond to individuals and communities according to their specific needs, circumstances and experiences, understanding that these will be racialized and with the aim of reducing harm”.

The NPCC announced that it would review the anti-racism guidelines, known as the “Action Plan Against Racism”, which some believe were responsible for the actions of officers who arrested Nowak.

“Treating everyone the same”
This does not mean “treating everyone the same” or being “blind to colour,” the document states, asking officers to be aware of the risk that the police “criminalize people” and that arrest and prosecution rates should be equal across different groups, even if crime levels are different.

Local Police Guidance
Further guidance published by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, the force under scrutiny for the handling of the murder of Henry Nowak, encourages officers to understand “the impact, trauma and history” of police activity on ethnic minorities.

Origin of Guidelines
The guidelines were drafted after the killing of George Floyd in 2020, which for the police was a “crucial moment and drove a real change”, even though the incident occurred in the United States.

Political Criticism and Review
The zero-tolerance commitment, now under review, was not a formal policy and was developed to address the low level of trust in the police among Black communities. However, Conservatives, Reform UK and the Democratic Unionist Party have called on the Home Secretary to intervene to prevent police forces from drafting similar guidelines in the future.

È il caso di Henry Nowak, studente di 18 anni, è morto lo scorso dicembre mentre veniva arrestato dalla polizia britannica a Southampton. Era accusato ingiustamente di aver aggredito per odio razziale un uomo. Tutto falso. False non erano le ferite da coltello che aveva subito da un 213nne sikh che lo aveva attaccato. Diceva di stare male, di non respirare, ma la polizia non gli ha creduto. È morto così. Una notizia nascosta da quasi tutti i media, gli stessi che stavano in ginocchio per Black Lives Matter. Meccanismi che scattano per la nostra coda di paglia che ci porta ad autoflagellarci per colpe vere e per colpe inesistenti, per la colpa di essere occidentali e bianchi. Eppure dovremmo essere color blind, ciechi rispetto al colore della pelle dei protagonisti delle notizie. White Lives Matter. This is the headline of today’s Il Tempo front page, which asks how much the life of a Western and white young man is worth. This is the case of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old student, who died last December while being arrested by British police in Southampton. He was unjustly accused of attacking a man with racial hatred. All false. The knife wounds he sustained from a 213-year-old Sikh who attacked him were also false. He said he was unwell, that he couldn’t breathe, but the police didn’t believe him. He died that way. A story hidden from almost all the media, the same media that were kneeling for Black Lives Matter. Mechanisms that trigger in our “straw man” that lead us to self-flagellate for real and nonexistent guilt, for the guilt of being Western and white. Yet we should be colorblind, blind to the skin color of the protagonists of the news.
