Many subjects I’ve photographed since I was 11 years old – that was 43 years ago – but the northern lights, also called aurora borealis here in the Northern Hemisphere, were never among them. And my first images of the aurora are far from perfect.

I did learn a few things though: a 24 mm lens is good, but 20 mm or 14 mm would be even better. The lens I used was the Canon EF 24–70 mm f/2.8L II. That maximum aperture of f/2.8 is decent, but next time I’ll be on the lookout for a wide-angle lens with f/1.4.

Most of the time I chose exposure times that were too long, so star trailing was basically guaranteed. I assumed 15 seconds would be fine, and I really should have done my homework more carefully beforehand.

A historic site with a dramatic backdrop: #StabbenFort is located on the island of Frøya and was part of the infamous Atlantic Wall – a 5,000km-long defensive line built by #Nazi Germany during World War II from the Bay of Biscay to Kirkenes.

In the spring of 1941, the German occupiers began building a coastal fort on the Stabben Plateau. Houses were expropriated or demolished, and families were displaced. The entire area was sealed off with barbed wire and minefields. The main weapons were three 15cm cannons with a range of 22km.

Going from our area in #Svellingen to the ferry port at #Dyrøy were just nearly twelve kilometers but a steady up and down with a confusing course of the road. During this trip (and back) we experienced different weather conditions - from sunny parts to rainy stages or pure wind, making the 7° Celsius feel more like up to -3° C in some parts. Anyway - the landscape made the challenging trip worth it! 💪
