Many subjects I’ve photographed since I was 11 years old – that was 43 years ago – but the northern lights, also called aurora borealis here in the Northern Hemisphere, were never among them. And my first images of the aurora are far from perfect.

I did learn a few things though: a 24 mm lens is good, but 20 mm or 14 mm would be even better. The lens I used was the Canon EF 24–70 mm f/2.8L II. That maximum aperture of f/2.8 is decent, but next time I’ll be on the lookout for a wide-angle lens with f/1.4.

Most of the time I chose exposure times that were too long, so star trailing was basically guaranteed. I assumed 15 seconds would be fine, and I really should have done my homework more carefully beforehand.

Last week’s storm brought more than just dramatic skies and roaring waves — it also brought a reminder of the courage and skill of those who protect lives at sea. As I photographed the storm at sunset, I suddenly caught flashing lights from the corner of my eye. A large vessel stormed across the beach: the KNRM (Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij).

Within moments, the lifeboat hit the water, cutting through crashing waves with incredible force. The sheer power of the launch was breathtaking — in one frame, the ship burst through a backlit wave, sending a giant spray skyward, and in the next, it rose above the water as if weightless. To witness such a scene, and to capture it, felt like pure luck and timing.

The KNRM is staffed largely by volunteers, men and women who risk the elements to rescue others in need. Seeing them in action, even in training or readiness, is a striking reminder of the human dedication behind maritime safety.

These shots were taken with my Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100–400mm, with the storm winds and salt spray making it as much a battle for my gear as for the lifeboat crew. Once again, cleaning up after the shoot was no small task — but moments like these are worth every grain of sand.

Serendipitous photo taken when I stopped off at this viewpoint on the drive home from work, when I saw there was a beautiful sunset and a couple conveniently providing the subject.

#CanonCanada has done me a dirty, and as a long-time and [previously] enthusiastic #Canon user, some poor customer service I've received recently both disappoints me and infuriates me.

I rarely call out companies on public platforms; but I'm BEYOND frustrated by recent customer service from #CanonCanada. I sent my camera for repair because a lens stopped locking properly to the body after multiple falls. #Canon's invoice for parts + labor was >$1,600. It seemed excessive, but I know sometimes injury to one part of a machine has a ripple effect on others. So I paid the hefty amount. The items came back mid-January; I was told they'd been fixed. I was excited for about 30 seconds until I attached the lens to the body, and realized it *still* didn't lock properly. Canon hadn’t fixed the issue. I called right away. The agent I spoke to agreed it should've been properly fixed & tested before return, & that I could send the equipment back to be fixed at no further cost to me. As recommended by the agent, I included a letter stating the issue (again), the circumstances upon which I was sending it back, & the case numbers under which this was filed. So imagine my surprise when I received an invoice for >$600 the other day. I clicked "reject charges," emailing Canon w/ the terms of the agreement, & questioning the charge. I called them today after not receiving a reply. I was told their “system has been down” (convenient); except, it seems, for the system that automatically ships a pkg back to the owner if they click “reject charges.” Maybe warn customers of that outcome before they click that button? So now I’m waiting for my camera (again), so I can turn around and send it to Canon (again). Upon leaving a #Google review, I saw that my experience is not a one-off. Poor communication & lack of competence in technicians makes me hesitant to continue w/ the brand when I upgrade. Is this what 15yrs of brand loyalty gets me??? (& 30yrs from my father before me) If you are looking for camera gear & still deciding which brand to go with… Well, I don’t know who the best option is for quality product AND quality service, but sadly, it is NOT Canon Canada.
