Day 3 #cycling in #Edmonton (on #CanadaDay): headed east along the #NorthSaskatchewan river. Beautiful scenery and excellent paths. One of the hills defeated me [*], mind you, so explored residential areas subsequently.

[*] my excuse is that my borrowed bicycle is single speed. 🙂

I am delighted to say that late last week, our North Saskatchewan was finally designated a Canadian Heritage River. The designation marks the end of a remarkable years-long campaign by Smoky Lake County, and county planner Kyle Schole. Thank you and congratulations! YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1835:
"Early today a poor Red deer, which was hotly pursued by a pack of fierce wolves, was observed rushing at full speed down the hills on the opposite side, directly towards the #NorthSaskatchewan River. This circumstance having engaged our attention, the foremost boats stopped to await the issue of the pursuit. On gaining the water the red deer dashed into the stream with reckless haste, having distanced all its pursuers. #CanadaHistory #AmWritingHistory #Books
YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1835:

"Wednesday. Rained during the night and nearly the whole of the day. Found a camp of Crees at Sturgeon River, from whom a quantity of provisions was traded. Encamped nearly 10 miles below the willow banks.
"Thursday. Rained during the greater part of the night. At dawn we continued our journey... #HistoricJourney #CanadaHistory #AmWritingHistory
After I planted the #purplepotatoes this morning, I had a wonderful bike ride along the #NorthSaskatchewan. It's 28 degrees here--yeah, May 14. Sounds coming off the #Edmonton #RiverQueen #paddleboat? "Oh baby baby, it's a wild world..." Was that Cat Stevens?
YORK FACTORY EXPRESS BLOGPOST:
More on the historic York Boats that rowed or sailed up and down the #Saskatchewan and #NorthSaskatchewan Rivers. This is a smaller York Boat, 26 feet long. On the Peace and the Mackenzie Rivers they built York Boats that were 40 feet long. #Blogpost #History http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/york-boats/
