I've got about a half-dozen different cardboard signs available for use in my solo protest vigils. Which one I bring out on any particular day depends on which issue might be more topical and likely to resonate with drivers of passing cars. (Stop the War, Defend the Voting Rights Act, Defend Our Environment, etc...)
For this entire week, it's been consistently the "No I.C.E." sign, the original sign which began my vigils last winter. Back then, it was Chicago and Minneapolis which first sent me out onto a street corner. This week, it is Delaney Hall which has returned the I.C.E. protest to the forefront.
When I began doing these solo street corner vigils, I committed myself to twice a week, for an hour each time. There was snow and cold then. Since spring has arrived, I've been aiming for four times a week. For the past couple of weeks, I've been out five times a week.
A few hours a week just standing quietly with a sign seems like such a small thing to do, when I read what other people are doing. But it has turned out to be what I needed. A few months ago, I was depressed and frantic at my inability to "fix" my country. Calling, writing, boycotting, all seemed to have no results. The big national protest days were always called for weekends, when I have to work. Somehow, standing on the corner was what I was looking for.
Logically, it doesn't really have greater results than everything else, but it feels different somehow. It's keeping me sane nowadays.
