The traditional wooden houses along the Nieuwendammerdijk are an important part of the city’s architectural history. They reflect late 1️⃣9️⃣th and early 2️⃣0️⃣th-century working-class housing, with some influence from the Amsterdam School, known for its brickwork and decorative style.

These homes are rare because wood was banned in central Amsterdam after major fires in the 15th and 16th centuries. 🔥 🚒🧯

“De Kleine Die” is a historic waterway and neighborhood in Nieuwendam, in the north part of the city. It began as a small peat river flowing into the “IJ” through a sluice, important for trade, shipbuilding, and moving farm goods.

The area grew into a community of fishermen, traders, and shipbuilders. In the 1️⃣9️⃣th and 2️⃣0️⃣th centuries, shipyards were built along the water.

Today, the “Kleine Die” is a quiet neighborhood with a strong community spirit. Despite redevelopment plans, many people want to preserve its historic character.
