And politically very potent too. We must learn to see the beauty in the artifacts of renewable energy. Looking back at centuries of Western ladscape painting or Japanese blockprints, the beauty of the landscape always was our reflection of our active entanglement with nature.
An American road trip to classic European-style windmills
While crisscrossing the heartland of America this summer we had the opportunity to stop and see six classic European style windmills in five states. Below are photographs of them and some background information on each windmill visited. Peace!

ILLINOIS
Fulton: De Immigrant Windmill was completed in 2001 after its segments were constructed in the Netherlands and then shipped to Fulton. The windmill structure is 46 feet tall and has a sail span of 72 feet.

IOWA
Elk Grove: They only working Danish windmill in the United States was first built built in 1848 in Nørre Snede, Denmark. It was bought and transported to Iowa and reconstructed as a Bicentennial project. The main windmill structure itself is 60 feet tall and has a 66 foot vane span.
Orange City: Now the local chamber visitors center and arts council location, this Dutch-style windmill structure began life in 1976 as local bank branch. It is 52 feet tall and was converts to its current uses in 2001.

KANSAS
Wamego: Per the signage on the site, the Old Schonhoff Dutch Mill was built in 1879 north of town and was moved to its current location in the Wamego City Park in 1925. The mill structure is 40 feet tall.

MICHIGAN
Holland: The DeZwaan (The Swan) Windmill is an authentic Dutch windmill. The 90 foot tall structure has a 80 foot sail span was built in Krommenie, Netherlands, in 1761 and shipped to the United States in 1964 and reopened on Windmill Island in 1965.

MINNESOTA
Minneopa State Park (near Mankato): The Seppmann Windmill was completed in 1864 on a local Blue Earth County farm that is now part of the state park. The 32 foot tall (not including the cap) stone windmill structure once had sails that spanned 72 feet.
