Seize the moment! Let's get out of the 'perform Holocaust memory for the gentiles' business altogether. We could have 5 museums instead of 5,000.

"#Jewish cultural and #Holocaust #museums in #Amsterdam are facing declining visitor numbers and financial problems attributed to a rise in anti-#Israel sentiment because of the #Gaza war.

At the #JewishMuseum, which opened in the 1930s and had its collection plundered by #German occupiers in the Second #WorldWar, there were 105,000 visitors in 2023. The following year — after the #October7 attacks on Israel by #Hamas — the figure dropped to about 86,000, and last year it fell further to 65,000.

Visitor figures for the #NationalHolocaustMuseum, which opened in March 2024, decreased by 11 per cent last year.

“We are not on the verge of collapse,” #EmileSchrijver, director of Amsterdam’s Jewish cultural quarter, which includes four museums, told Het Parool newspaper. “But we cannot continue financially as we are now."
