Whenever I suggest to seemingly intelligent people that #NZGreens are the best option to address the growing poverty, costs of energy dependence and the climate crisis facing all NZers, I reliably get an insulting response such as I must be smoking too much weed or some other insinuation about my mental health.
I have learned not to respond defensively to these insults and instead start talking about specific Greens policies I know they will like such as tax free loans to install domestic solar and batteries across the country that could in fact not only be paid off in a decade or less but also save the average household an estimated $1,000 per year on their electricity bills while being paid off.
This immediately changes the conversation and somewhat legitimises the Greens policies. It certainly doesn’t suddenly convince people to support Greens but does act as a great way to counter #NZMedia partisan rhetoric regarding Greens and hopefully helps people to take a closer look at Green’s policies.
