The non-narcotic NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin irritate gastrointestinal linings, trigger ulcers, and cause bleeding. The narcotics carry the risk of addiction. Is there a better approach? Neuroscientists at Tulane University and the University of Texas-Dallas think so. Studying how nerves transmit pain, they find that nerves connected to the source of pain release a so-called extra cellular enzyme VLK, vertebrate lonesome kinase, that is necessary for transmission of pain signals. Then, using a mouse model, the researchers show that depleting the supply of VLK or inhibiting its function significantly reduced surgical pain sensations while leaving other sensory and motor functions unaffected. Increasing the concentration of VLK intensified pain perception. This discovery opens the door for developing non-NSAID and non-narcotic medications that effectively mute pain without undesirable side effects. The bad news is that the pathway to the successful development of anti-VLK medications may be long and winding. Neurology researchers at Seattle’s University of Washington studied the records of 1661 NAAA athletes and military cadets with a mean age of 18 years and will present their data during this April’s American Academy of Neurology 2025 Annual Meeting. Using activity records pinpointing days until the athletes’s unrestricted return to play (URTP) and time until completely free of symptoms (daysASYMP), the data indicated that over-the-counter pain medication use leads to the 21% faster URTP as well as 15% shorter daysASYMP. These over-the-counter pain medications, analgesics in medical jargon, reduce brain tissue inflammation. Since much of this inflammation occurs within the first 24 hours after injury, that’s the best time to consistently use these analgesics. Even though the NSAID medications are better anti-inflammatories, there was little evidence that they performed better than the acetaminophen. Jeremy OngI really should cut down on my NSAIDs intake, as every time I sustained a laceration or some other wound, which happens more often than not with me, as I’m pretty accident-prone, it’s like I’m a hemophiliac, since those analgesics affect the way platelets work and could interfere with normal blood coagulation.
