Neuroscientists at Tulane University and the University of Texas-Dallas have discovered a way to stop pain-transmitting nerves from doing just that. #pain #VLK #NSAIDS #opioids

Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "A New Way To Stop Pain Effective pain-killing can be fraught with complications. The non-narcotic NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin irritate gastrointestinal linings, trigger ulcers, and cause bleeding. The narcotics carry the risk of addiction. Is there a better approach? Neuroscientists at Tulane University and the University of Texas-Dallas think so. Studying how nerves transmit pain, they find that nerves connected to the source of pain release a so-called extra cellular enzyme VLK, vertebrate lonesome kinase, that is necessary for transmission of pain signals. Then, using a mouse model, the researchers show that depleting the supply of VLK or inhibiting its function significantly reduced surgical pain sensations while leaving other sensory and motor functions unaffected. Increasing the concentration of VLK intensified pain perception. This discovery opens the door for developing non-NSAID and non-narcotic medications that effectively mute pain without undesirable side effects. The bad news is that the pathway to the successful development of anti-VLK medications may be long and winding. We can only hope that this new approach to pain control will be available……someday soon. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/11/251123085557.htm https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adp1007 #pain #VLK #NSAIDS #opioids"

Pain management has taken a significant leap forward with a new study revealing that depleting the VLK enzyme could lead to non-narcotic pain relief without the drawbacks of traditional painkillers. This groundbreaking research could pave the way for a new generation of pain management medications that don't come with the risks of addiction or side effects associated with NSAIDs and opioids. The study's findings have left scientists hopeful that a non-narcotic pain relief solution is on the horizon.

Today NSAIDs are set to become the leading cause of peptic ulcers worldwide, taking the crown from Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) as access to sanitation improves.

Once-Chronic Peptic Ulcers Now Curable

Over the past 25 years, peptic ulcer disease went from a costly, chronic condition to one that can be eliminated with little chance of recurrence. But the road from point A to point B was not an easy

Regular use of the over-the-counter headache medications acetaminophen or the NSAIDS including ibuprofen led to as much as 21% faster functional concussion recovery. #concussion #headache #analgesics #acetaminoophen #NSAIDS #urtp #daysasymp

Neurology researchers at Seattle’s University of Washington studied the records of 1661 NAAA athletes and military cadets with a mean age of 18 years and will present their data during this April’s American Academy of Neurology 2025 Annual Meeting. Using activity records pinpointing days until the athletes’s unrestricted return to play (URTP) and time until completely free of symptoms (daysASYMP), the data indicated that over-the-counter pain medication use leads to the 21% faster URTP as well as 15% shorter daysASYMP. These over-the-counter pain medications, analgesics in medical jargon, reduce brain tissue inflammation. Since much of this inflammation occurs within the first 24 hours after injury, that’s the best time to consistently use these analgesics. Even though the NSAID medications are better anti-inflammatories, there was little evidence that they performed better than the acetaminophen. That is likely because both types of painkillers effectively treat headache, and relief of this symptom correlates well with overall recovery. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/over-counter-analgesics-improve-concussion-outcomes-2025a100063h #concussion #headache #analgesics #acetaminoophen #NSAIDS #urtp #daysasymp"

I really should cut down on my NSAIDs intake, as every time I sustained a laceration or some other wound, which happens more often than not with me, as I’m pretty accident-prone, it’s like I’m a hemophiliac, since those analgesics affect the way platelets work and could interfere with normal blood coagulation. I could replace them with COX-2 inhibitors or even opioids, but then that opens it up to a whole other bunch of problems. #drugs #opioids #nsaids #health #healthcare #pain
