Stamen at NACIS 2024 | Stamen

The North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS) 2024 conference in Tacoma, WA was yet another fantastic gathering of cartographers, mappers, and map enthusiasts. Stamen was well-represented this year by Kelsey Taylor, Eric Brelsford, and Alan McConchie. This was a busy year for us – we presented five talks between the three of us! Now that...

I’ve been messing around with imitating hand-drawn or antique map styles with QGIS for a while, and after presenting on the topic at #nacis2024 I’ve finally posted a thing with what I’ve learned and some styles to download: https://andywoodruff.com/posts/2024/qgis-hand-drawn-maps/
Hand-Drawn and Antique Styles with QGIS - Andy Woodruff, cartographer

Tips and tricks for designing hand drawn and antique map styles in QGIS.

Yesterday while traveling home I took up the Guerilla Cartography “Atlas in a Day” challenge for this year’s NACIS annual conf. The theme was “flow”, and the map / viz I ended up making was to plot ~300 GPX tracks of group bicycle rides from LuckyDuck bicycle shop & cafe while it existed from 2014-2023. I used the RideWithGPS.com API to grab the data and plotted it using D3JS and HTML Canvas. It’s pretty quick & dirty but the result is satisfying:

After watching Rob Simmons talk yesterday on using GDAL for working with satellite imagery and esoteric scientific data formats I felt motivated to use GDAL to create a hillshade of Oakland using 1 arc second DEM data. I wasn’t aware of the flags like “multidirectional”, “combined”, or “igor” that you can pass to `gdaldem hillshade` to get rather aesthetically pleasing results. I used the -igor flag for the hillshade in this post’s image
