U. of Maryland Geophysicist Helps Identify Moonquake Dangers that Could Threaten Future Missions

A new paper revealed that ground acceleration from moonquakes, rather than meteor impacts, was responsible for shifting lunar landscapes at Taurus-Littrow valley, where Apollo 17 landed in 1972.

A new study shows that seismic activity on the moon could pose risk to long-term lunar infrastructure.

A #Moonquake is the lunar equivalent of an #Earthquake, a seismic event that occurs on the Moon.

The cause of the moonquakes remains unknown, but a leading hypothesis includes tidal gravity from -- and relative heating by -- our Earth. Regardless of the source, future moon dwellings need to be built to withstand the frequent shakings.

Moonquake

A moonquake is the lunar equivalent of an earthquake, a seismic event that occurs on the Moon. Although less frequent and intense than earthquakes on Earth, moonquakes provide valuable insights into the Moon's internal structure and geological activity.

In 1987 there was a (very) limited release of an arcade cabinet called "Moonquake," I have just discovered. Within, was a rather novel hardware arrangement.

This was internally an Amiga 500 with an Ensoniq 5503 DOC (the sound synth chip in the Apple IIgs and Mirage synthesizers) interfaced to it for audio. On the Apple IIgs, the DOC had one 64K sound bank. The chip supported two such banks, but the 5503 in Moonquake apparently had 512K of sound RAM -- each oscillator (or channel (sorta)) had its own 64K of RAM to pull from.

Thanks for the info on this, Ians Schmidt and Brumby from the Apple II slack.

India’s Vikram lander has detected the first sign of a moonquake since the 1970s. The lander, part of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, landed on the lunar south pole on August 23, 2021. The moonquake could reveal new insights into the moon’s interior structure and evolution.

If the event is confirmed to be a moonquake, it would be the first detected on the lunar surface since the 1970s — when #NASA's #Apollo missions first studied seismic activity on the moon and detected #moonquakes.

A #moonquake would suggest that the moon isn't just some big, dense space rock — there's actually more going on under its surface than meets the eye. #Chandrayaan3 #Vikram
