Wow, X is adding a dislike button!! 😲 Say good bye to controversial and contrarian content From now on, we all have to simply agree with the majority opinion or risk the algorithm shadow banning us 🤷‍♀️

okay listen, i'm pretty open in criticizing midjourney for their censorship and banning of users - i think it's the most retarded thing one can do to paying customers but i also see people nitpicking every single thing they do on here and i also see people shill every single

it's weird to me that anarchists/anti-authoritarians (in particular) often don't seem to view online moderation as authority

cause it plainly is

can you recall mods? are they representing the interests of a body/community? can you appeal? what does the appeal really signify (any real checks on it)?

it's not a justified hierarchy, in my opinion. but people seem to just pass over it as necessary and not rife with abuse of power

As a facilitator, working with both sides of an issue with a group can be hard. Doing so challenges me to practice non-attachment.

what's funny about the 'moderating is a difficult and thankless job' position is that you can simply not do it

and not just you, the mod. us, the body.

"but then xyz would happen.." oh, like it does in real life? go outside, it's full of self-moderation

if you don't like it (on or offline) you can always self-select or make your own echo chamber, walk away from people, etc.

in reality we are all our own moderators

@mhd re: moderation …

The two comments that I removed under <https://old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/1rsqtl1/freebsd_users_we_need_to_talk_about_claude_code/oa92d03/?context=1> were bot-specific; not discussion between humans.

The more recent comment that I removed from <https://old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/1rsqtl1/freebsd_users_we_need_to_talk_about_claude_code/oalq3np/?context=2> was not only off-topic, it was unacceptable for other reasons.

I deleted three of my own comments to thwart space-wasting hijackers.

Generally, there's a history of people aiming to hijack anything that even vaguely mentions AI. Their selfishness and closed-mindedness is counterproductive.

I could make things cleaner under the Claude Code post by removing the detritus, but for now, it stays.

I'll clean up what's visible, and review some hidden problems, probably after <https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/30640> is closed (hopefully fixed).

That's not the big picture, but I hope that you can understand some of what goes into this. Feel free to send me a private message if you have any other question about moderation.

Thanks.

Something I genuinely deeply dislike about #email is that there isn't a way for a list's moderator to mark a message as spam once it has already been delivered to subscribers.
Context: Got hit by another GitHub comment notification masquerading as an official GitHub email.
But this is not unique to GitHub, all the mailing lists I've been on that had a spam problem - or worse, had people posting violent or disgusting images - could only resort to telling subscribers: "Hey, don't open that message from yesterday. I hope you didn't already do it." The whole thing is a pretty glaring #moderation hole.

If I want to have an async development workflow, is there a way to eg. set up (a mailng list on / an instance of) #SourceHut such that it's as resistant to targeted harassment as a more centralized forge / messaging platform?

The strategy of (presumable AI operated) botnet trying to spam #fcz instance with fake accounts (for whatever purpose) is somewhat funny. They somehow figured out, that I am moderator - so the first thing these profiles do is to block me.

Which makes my job extremely easy, as I really can just delete all accounts, which block me (if it is the first thing they do: before posting anything, following anybody, or so). Of course, there is also distinct pattern of weird mail servers they use.

The strategies of our new AI overlords remind me more of "intelligence" of insects, like mosquitos, or so. Dumb, but the problem is persistence of their activity...
