Posts like this are why #IFTAS is not a trustworthy source of fedi moderation. Olifant was the instance admin who's moderators coordinated an attack on a trans leftist, slandering her repeatedly until she left the instance and then continuing to claim it was a 'both sides' situation.

IFTAS was formed soon after, but continued to work with people like Oli, take advisement from abusers and bring on people who defended the attack (including the cc in this message).

Struggling a bit with the whole hashtag review section in admin/moderation. Surely, as a single-user instance, this is about content that I am/am not interested in? So if I say 'Not Trendable', or 'Not Used' (eg.) then that's okay? If this is how it works why do some tags come back asking for a review? To change my mind? Surely having a single-user instance is all about personalisation, or, am I missing something here?

FIRES on Island One

(๐Ÿค Nova) PSA to Fedi admins: If you're going to have an announcements account that is not monitored for DMs, please consider linking one or more personal accounts of your instance's moderation team!

My system occasionally checks on instances for activity from their admins (simply because we're on fedi and are neurodivergent
โ€‹โ€‹), and there have been times where we found instances with announcements accounts or personal accounts of instance staff that show no signs of activity (last post is more than a year old), which is bad if an instance is open-registration. We have seen open-registration instances with no visible activity from staff become infested with spam bots as well as CSAM, so we personally put possibly-abandoned instances up for review by the rest of enby.life staff, especially if the instance is a public instance (more than 50 active users per month).

Friendly reminder: last year I built FediMod FIRES, a protocol and reference server implementation for sharing moderation data.

I haven't yet been able to get anyone to adopt it or even signal intent to adopt. But regularly I see people complaining about the lack of data sharing when it comes to moderation, especially for combating spam, scams, and harassment. The tool is there, please use it!

Whilst I'm not actively working on FediMod FIRES this quarter, I did apply in November for a grant to continue that work, and last I heard a few weeks ago is that the grant made it to the next stage, so I may have some money again to fund development.

It's not 1.0.0 yet, because I decided it needed more work for me to be happy to call it that, but it is usable!

Installation is also super simple for data producers, literally two commands on debian or ubuntu boxes.

Chatrooms were not meant to last forever.

I am currently in a chatroom which is about 10 years old, with about 40 members, and it is showing clear signs of rot.

Nobody is actively moderating it. A couple of people are trying, but their attention is split, and this room is the lower priority.

When a sufficiently large group is unmoderated, and abuse arises, the victim has no choice but to leave the group to evade the abuser. This means that, in general, unmoderated groups tend to shed their most vulnerable members and retain their most toxic ones.

This is why I am disappointed in every chat platform that does not give an easy way to export your chat history. Because people stay in the room to keep access to their memories, when they should be leaving and letting the chat die. On IRC you didn't even have to request a data export, because everything was logged in plain text already. It's complicated now, and for reasons I do not find satisfying.

This is why people like me refuse to use Discord as a forum, as a wiki, as a knowledge hub. Because knowledge hubs are supposed to last forever. And chatrooms are not.

Last week I had to babysit the social media accounts from my employer.

Instagram and Facebook are an absolute nightmare and mindf*ck and I don't envy our social media manager.
