Spain’s meteorologists subjected to ‘alarming’ rise in hate speech, minister warns

Environment minister says attacks on social media affect perceptions of meteorology and denigrate researchers’ work

#HurricaneMelissa left #meteorologists stunned and worried
Melissa's extreme winds, periods of rapidly intensifying winds, and the way it skipped a typical replacement of its inner core amazed scientists who study tropical cyclones.
In the minds of many – but not all – #hurricane and #climate experts, Melissa’s terrifying trip through the #Caribbean also piled on evidence of the increasing influence of a warming ocean on an evolving hurricane landscape.

What #Pacific ‘blob’ + #LaNiña means for #winter in #US
What is clear to #meteorologists is that the Pacific #heatwave may be a significant player in influencing late fall and winter #weather patterns across large parts of the #NorthernHemisphere.
The big question mark for winter in the #UnitedStates is what the extreme #ocean heat, with water #temperatures running as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit above average for this time of year, will do to the #jetstream.

What the Pacific ‘blob’ + La Niña means for winter in the US

A marine heat wave spanning much of the North Pacific Ocean is already influencing weather in North America and is poised to make its mark on winter. But forecasters have another global weather pattern to consider: La Niña.

Tracking Aftermath From #HurricaneErin on #Ocean
#Meteorologists piece together aftereffects in #hurricane’s path, and look ahead to future storms.
One key signature is temperature. Ocean is layered like a cake, with warm water on top and cold water below. #Hurricanes churn those layers, bringing cooler water to surface. Because hurricanes feed on heat, this cooling effect could weaken future storms in area, said Greg Foltz, #oceanographer at #NOAA

#NationalWeatherService is now hiring back hundreds of positions that got cut in the #DOGE chaos
#NWS has received permission to hire 450 #meteorologists, #hydrologists and radar technicians just months after being hit hard by DOGE related cuts and early retirement incentives.
The new hiring number includes 126 new positions that were previously approved and will apply to “front-line mission critical” personnel, a #NOAA official told CNN.

"Hurricanes. Typhoons. Cyclones. Tropical storms. Tropical depressions. What does it all MEAAAN? Let’s dive in.

Career #meteorologists Dr. Kim Wood of the University of Arizona and Space City Weather’s Matt Lanza join for a two-guest two-parter to address the “deadlier” female-named hurricanes, why hurricane season happens, the category system, where hurricanes come from, why they have eyes, and how we track cyclones’ paths so we can stay out of them. Do #meteorologists not know that mid is short for middle? I live in St Louis. Middle of the god damn country. And yet I constantly read news reports that stay dangerous storms tore through the #Midwest. Omg, where? South Dakota. Wisconsin. Michigan. That is NOT Midwest.

Does anyone happen to know how #meteorologists currently track #tornadoes?

We've apparently got an active one near #Lodgepole / #DraytonValley atm (~17:20) but what I'm seeing on #EnvironmentCanada #DopplarRadar doesn't look like what I'd expect based on a documentary I saw on this some years back.

Just curious, not criticising. 🙂

So reports are, as usual, Trump's blaming everyone else for embarrassingly low turnout for his birthday bash parade, esp #meteorologists who predicted poss storms in DC at the time of the parade.

Predicting the weather has never been ez or 100%.

But #ClimateChange has made predictions even more difficult & iffy than usual. So have #DOGE chain-saw staffing & budget cuts.

Appreciate meteorologists - scientists who do their best to provide the public w/useful, imp, even life-saving information.

I'd love to know from a #meteorologists what we saw in the sky last night.
