all of this has me a little homesick for the Aporkalypse, the peaceful chill coop minecraft server inhabited mostly (entirely?) by #mefites in the early teens. I missed the most intense build-out phase but it was at least still kind of active when I came along, and it's still the truest fulfillment of the promise of "Virtual Reality" that I've ever experienced and very much a Walled City vibe in terms of people just building without much of a plan.

(But there was also infrastructure, a glorious rail network both above ground and in the nether)

I remember it was brought back online some years later (maybe in a read-only capacity) and it was kind of haunting to wander through remembered neighborhoods of this vast abandoned world

We #Mefites mark 25 years of #Metafilter on July 14th.

If you're in #NewEngland (#Massachusetts #NewHampshire #Vermont #Maine) we're having a meetup Sunday, near #Boston (#CambridgeMA) - check IRL or message me for details. #BostonWeekend

Some of Daniel Davies's commentary focusing on academia & on the cultures/norms of research in general. A fave: "LIBOR for the universities?" (2015) asks: in academia, what scandals are waiting for public scrutiny of the type LIBOR got?

'nobody has really considered what they might look like to an outsider'

More in my series curating work by finance expert Daniel Davies, this time focusing on academia and on the cultures and norms of research in general. In 'why i am (still after all) an economist'...

All Fun and Games

Nice weekly free thread discussing the games we play! Don't miss Wobbuffet's commentary about the history of parlor games from antiquity to the present, and how old games reveal themselves in modern equivalents.

For the rest of August: MeMail me to tell me you've contributed USD $150 to #MeFi, and I'll make a post. $225 if you want to specify some kind of theme.
