Linux/bash tip: for very large, single-level directories of files like, say, your icloud photo archive mirror, there will come a time when your chosen photo viewing software will slow as it reaches the inevitable internal limits to thumbnail creation.

In these cases, simply create a separate tree by year and populate the year directories with symlinks to the source folder. Now point your viewing to that link tree and you'll easily be able to navigate by year.
